Dua when travelling

Dua is a manifestation of one’s faith and trust in Allah (SWT). It reflects the belief that Allah (SWT) is the ultimate protector and provider, and only He has the power to grant safety and security. Therefore, making Dua before and during travel not only helps in seeking protection but also strengthens one’s faith and reliance on Allah (SWT).

We should try to learn these 5 essential dua when travelling

  1. Dua before starting the journey
  2. Dua for leaving home
  3. Dua for boarding a vehicle
  4. Dua during the journey
  5. Dua upon reaching the destination

Reference to this dua:

Narrated by Anas bin Malik r.a, The Messenger of Allah s.a.w. said:

“Whoever says (upon leaving his house): “In the Name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, there is no might or power except by Allah”,’it will be said to him: ‘You have been sufficed and protected, and the devil will go far away from him”.(Sunan At-Tirmizi)

Dua for leaving home

Umm Salamah   رضي الله عنها said, “Never did the Prophet  صلى الله عليه وسلم leave my house without looking towards heaven, supplicating:

Allaahumma ‘innee ‘a’oodhu bika ‘an ‘adhilla, ‘aw ‘udhalla, ‘aw ‘azilla, ‘aw ‘uzalla, ‘aw ‘adhlima, ‘aw ‘udhlama, ‘aw ‘ajhala ‘aw yujhala ‘alayya

O Allah, I seek refuge in You lest I misguide others, or I am misguided by others, lest I cause others to err or I am caused to err, lest I abuse others or be abused, and lest I behave foolishly or meet with the foolishness of others.

Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah, An-Nasa’i, Sahih At-Tirmidhi 3/152 and Sahih Ibn Majah 2/336

Dua for boarding a vehicle

Dua for travellers

It is recommended to make Dua upon boarding any vehicle as recommended by Our Prophet s.a.w. by saying:

“Subhanal-ladzi sakh-khara lana hadza wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin. Wa inna ila Rabbina lamun-qalibun.”

In the name of Allah and all praise is for Allah. How perfect He is, the One Who has placed this (transport) at our service and we ourselves would not have been capable of that, and to our Lord is our final destiny.(Sahih Muslim)

Allahumma inna nas-aluka fi safarina haza-l-birra wat-taqwa, wa minal-‘amali ma tardho. Allahumma hawwin ‘alaina safarana haza, watwi ‘anna bu’dahu, Allahumma antas-sohibu fis-safar wal-khalifatu fil-ahli. Allahumma inni a-‘uzu bika min wa’atha-is-safar, wa kabbati-manzar, wa su-i-lmunqalabi fil-mal wal-ahli

O Allah, we ask You in our travel for righteousness, taqwa, and good deeds that You are pleased with. O Allah make our travel an ease, and shorten the distance for us. O Allah, You are our Companion in travel and the guardian of our family (in our absence). O Allah I seek refuge in You from the hardships of travel, a sight of grief, and from an unfortunate occurance in wealth and family. (Sahih Muslim, Riyadh as saliheen)
