The word يَقِينِ ‘yaqeen’ means solid conviction. It is the kind of knowledge which is more than just knowing something. Yaqeen is even stronger than emaan. It is something you are absolutely convinced about or you are fully sure about it.
There are 3 types of Yaqeen .And we come to know about this from the tafseer Surah at-Takathur and Surah Waqia .
1. Ilm al Yaqeen – yaqeen based on knowledge.
2. Ayn al Yaqeen – yaqeen based on seeing
3. Haq al Yaqeen – yaqeen based on feeling.
For example, seeing smoke signifies fire even if we can’t see the fire. This is ilm ul yaqeen . We know that Smoke signifies fire through our Knowledge. Now we know something is burning when we actually see the fire , it is called Ayn al Yaqeen and We will be convinced there is fire when we feel its burning or warmth. This is called Haq al Yaqeen.

Let me explain in detail-
The first type of yaqeen is referred to by the name ‘ilm-ul-yaqeen (the knowledge of certainty), which means that certainty is the result of knowledge. At this degree the object of certainty is knowledge just as the aim of knowledge is certainty.
In Ayah (102 :5 ) Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala states
كَلاَّ لَوْ تَعْلَمُونَ عِلْمَ الْيَقِينِ
“Nay! If you only knew with knowledge of certainty.”
Implication of Ilm ul Yaqeen : Quran is Ilm ul Yaqeen . Through the ilm of Quran we have the yaqeen on day of Resurrection.
The second type of yaqeen is ayn-ul-yaqeen (the vision of certainty), that is, certainty as a consequence of contemplation and vision.
Implication of Ayn ul Yaqeen : Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala then says in Quran (102: 7),
ثُمَّ لَتَرَوُنَّهَا عَيْنَ الْيَقِينِ
“Then you shall most certainly see it with certainty of sight.”
This means that when We will see the day of Resurrection with your own eyes ,then we will convinced of what we were being warned about it in the world.
Allah says in Surah At takathur :The disbelievers demand Ayn al Yaqeen . But they will wake up to the reality only when they reach their graves. It is then when the truth will dawn up them.
In Ayah 6, Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala says,
لَتَرَوُنَّ الْجَحِيمَ
“Surely, you all shall see the hellfire.”
The word ‘La’ is used to respond to an oath. It is a ‘qasam’ for certainty. It has been place to add emphasis on what is being said.
Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala then says in Ayah 7,
ثُمَّ لَتَرَوُنَّهَا عَيْنَ الْيَقِينِ
“Then you shall most certainly see it with certainty of sight.”
This means that when you will see it by your own eyes you will convinced of what you were being warned about in the world. But when you will see it that will be the time when you will be thrown into it. (Allahuma ajirni min’nan naar)
And the third type of yaqeen is called haqq-ul-yaqeen (the level of certainty gained through Personal experience), that is, certainty as supreme truth.
Allah says in Quran :56:95
– “Inna hadha la huwa haq qul yaqeen.” (Surat Al Waqi’ah )
“Indeed, this is the true certainty.” (Holy Quran, The Inevitable)
Implication of Haqqul Yaqeen : We should have a certain yaqeen that None of the reward and Punishment mentioned in the verses of Quran is refutable because they are dead certainty that has no room for doubt and suspicion.
Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala has bestowed us with two yaqeens in this world, ilm al yaqeen and haq al yaqeen. The Qur’an is ilm al yaqeen, we have no doubt about it whereas the disbelievers desire Ayn al Yaqeen, they want to see everything with their eyes before they can accept and believe in it.
Certainty is mentioned twenty-seven times in the Quran. The Prophet Muhammad peace and blessings be upon him, and by extension his followers, are urged in the Quran to
“worship your Lord until what is certain (al-yaqeen) comes to you.”(Qura 15 :99 )
What is certain, in this verse, indicates two things, according to scholars of Quranic exegesis.
