Zakat is a charity that is compulsory on Muslims who are sahibe nisab, i.e they posses a certain amount of minimum wealth as stipulated by shariah. Zakat percentage is 2.5% . Zakat is compulsory on a Sahib Al-Nisab. A Sahib Al-Nisab is one who possesses the Nisab of Zakat (a required amount of money or assets that qualifies a person liable of discharging Zakat). A person who possesses this amount of cash/assets for a complete year, will give two and a half percent of its total in Zakat. Quran Verses about Zakat and Charity

Men whom neither trade nor sale diverts them from the Remembrance of Allah (with heart and tongue), nor from performing As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat), nor from giving the Zakat. They fear a Day when hearts and eyes will be overturned (from the horror of the torment of the Day of Resurrection).24:37

So establish Prayer, and pay Zakah, and hold fast to Allah. He is your Protector. What an excellent Protector; what an excellent Helper!22:78

Verily, those who have attained to faith and do good works, and are constant in prayer, and dispense charity – they shall have their reward with their Sustainer, and no fear need they have, and neither shall they grieve.(2:277)

What harm would it do them to believe in God and the Last Day, and give charitably from the sustenance God has given them? God knows them well. (4:39)

Likewise, each amount they spend, be it small or large, and each journey they undertake, shall be recorded in their favour so that Allah may bestow upon them reward for their good deeds. (9:121)

The term Muslim signifies “one who surrenders himself to God”; correspondingly, Islam denotes “self-surrender to God”. Both these terms are applied in the Qur’an to all who believe in the One God and affirm this belief by an unequivocal acceptance of His revealed messages. Since the Qur’an represents the final and most universal of these divine revelations, the believers are called upon, in the sequence, to follow the guidance of its Apostle and thus to become an example for all mankind

Subhan Allah! Allah is merciful towards his servants. All we have is a neymat of Allah and we should try to spend on the people who are needy. May Allah give us taufeeq to follow all the commands of Allah in a good way. And make me among Those who observe the prayers, and give charity regularly, and are certain of the Hereafter.

Ameen.
