Quran Tafseer meaning

Tafseer of Quran is the commentary or explanation of the verses of Quran.

Multiple English translations of the Qur’an, Islam’s scripture, line shelves at book stores. Amazon.com sells more than a dozen. Because of the growing Muslim communities in English-speaking countries, as well as greater academic interest in Islam, there has been a blossoming issues in recent years of English translations.

So how accurate are the Qur’an’s renderings into English? The record is mixed. Some are simply poor translations. Others adopt sectarian biases, while some often insert political annotation.

Why should we read tafseer of Quran ?

There are many verses in the Qur’an in which understanding knowledge of linguistic expressions and styles is not sufficient. Rather, they require information about certain expressions because these expressions point to specific meanings Understanding Quran  does not require language only but also a level of intellect in understanding and comprehension which agrees with the level and elevation of the book.

The reality of the Arabs when the Quran was being revealed was that not all of them were able to understand the Quran generally and specifically.

Rather, they used to differ in their understanding according to their intellectual elevation. Because of that reason the Sahabah’s ability to explain and understand the Qur’an was at variance due to the disparity of their understanding of the Arabic language and also due to the disparity in their intelligence and comprehension.

6)Tafsir Al Tabari

Jāmial-bayānan ta’wīl āy al-Qur’ān, popularly Tafsīr al-Ṭabarī (Arabic: تفسير الطبري), is a classic Sunni tafsir by the Persian scholar Muhammad ibn Jarir al-Tabari (838–923). The work is a collective tafsir, very rich in content, and a major source for academic research and historical inquiry.

Tabari has primarily used narratives of the Prophet, including narrations and comments of the sahabah and tabi’in where necessary. He has included linguistics and grammatical explanations to many words. Also knowledgeable in the area of hadith, Tabari carefully indicates the chain of narrations, sometimes elaborating on the trustability of narrators.

Not available online or elsewhere but used in other Tafsirs.

The size of this work and the independence of judgment in it seem to have prevented it from having a large circulation, but scholars such as Baghawi and Suyuti used it largely; Ibn Kathir used it in his Tafsir ibn Kathir.

  1. Tafseer is like diving into an ocean which has no shore, allama kawthari mentioned that over 100 000 tafseer have been written and a hanafi alim wrote a tafseer which consisted of 1000 volumes this was mentioned in yateematul bayan written by allama yusuf binnori. Similarly a scholar wrote 13 volumes just on the word bismilah mentioned by shayk abdul haq dehlawi in zadul mutaqin. Another great example would be tafseer tabari which was initially 30 000 pages and then the author imam tabari condensed it down to 3000 pages due to the degeneration and lack intellectual pursuit. The list goes on the reason being quran is the word of god an and he is unlimited so his words will also be unlimited in meaning in the aspect of tafseer. This would mean one can never claim to have exhausted its meaning in an all encompassing manner leaving no room for further discovery and understanding.
If this is not a sign of the validity of islam then i rest my case. We marvel at the tafsir which we still have access to today but can you imagine what we potentially were capable of possessing had it not been for the onslaught of the Mongols who were enemies of knowledge and destroyed colossal amounts of islamic literature just like the crusaders who were hell bent on carrying out the same act of erasing muslim works from the face of this earth.
This introduction was much needed before mentioning some tafaseer due to the quran being the focal point and beacon of light for all Muslims rather the entire human race had they seen through the light of belief dispelling any signs of darkness and disbelief.
    1) Tahreer wa tanweer(ibne ashur) : this tafseer discusses the language and eloquence in a detailed manner. The author was also a master of ‘maqasid’ a topic which discusses the purpose and aim of islamic teachings and explains many ayat through the lens of this style of interpretation something scarcely found in many tafaseer.
2)nukat wal uyoon(mawardi) the author has delivered what he promised in his preface, he mentions that he does intend to gather the interpretations you can generally find in the books rather he will bring to our tables of knowledge such points and interpretations not known to many people a sort of trivia you could say. After reading many tafaseer one will undoubtedly find something new sometimes the final pieces of the intellectual puzzle making it a real treat for its reader.
    3) irshad aql saleeem (abu saood who was an ottoman qadi) this great piece of work has combined books which dealt mainly with language and eloquence like kashaf and baydawi and its style is such that some scholars have named it the best tafseer written.
