Do you Know that the teacher of Imam Bukhari and Muslim was an alcoholic ?

A touching  story of the teacher of Imam bukhari and Imam muslim who was an alcoholic . Allah swt guided him through a single Hadith of Rasul Allah swt and it inspired him to become a great scholar and an Imam

The hadeeth of Prophet Muhammad(pbuh) has influenced the life of many individuals. A single hadeeth has been so powerful that it had moulded  many thiefs, robbers and drunkards to Islam.Haver you heard of the teacher of Imam al Bukhari and Muslim -“abdullah ibn masalamah al Qanabi”?

The teacher of Imam Al bukhari and Muslim was an alcoholic. He was addicted to alcohol. He had no manners, and was the worst in his community. He was the only man at that time who used to roam publically with a bottle in his hand.He was shameless and had a  low level of morality.

One day he saw a huge number of people gathered around a man.Everybody wanted to converse with the man and they seemed to respect him.He became very curious. So he went there with the bottle still in his hand and asked the man,”who are you?”quite shamelessly.People told him he was a muhaddith, who narrates the hadeeth of the prophet Muhammad (pbuh). And this Imam with whom he was talking so roughly  was Imam As Sha’bi. Iman as sha’bi  was calm and answered him politely. He was a  drunk man talking to a great Imam in such a shameless manner and the imam was not offended at all. He didn’t knew anything about Islam and he didn’t had any manners. He said ,”Ok,If you are a muhaddith, then narrate one hadith for me give me a hadith”The Imam read the situation and he read the man,He then gave such a suitable hadeeth to him that it entirely changed his life.

“And if you do not feel ashamed, then do whatever you like.”       sahih bukhari

Narrated Abu Mas`ud:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, ‘One of the sayings of the early Prophets which the people have got is: If you don’t feel ashamed (from Haya’: pious shyness from committing religeous indiscretions) do whatever you like.” (See Hadith No 690, 691, Vol 4)

Sahih al bukhari 6120
book 78,Hadith 147
vol 8,book 73,hadith 141
These words opened his heart and and it went straight into his heart. The words “If you have no shame, then do whatever you wish and Allah will repay it fully and appropriately”became so deeply engraved in his heart that he decided to change. And he went to the famous Imam Malik ibn abbas the imam of madina and studied under him.And this very man who was  an alcoholic later became the teacher of Imam Bukhari and  Imam Muslim. He became the most famous scholar of his time.
