Quick answers

What does inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un mean?

It means “Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return.” It reminds us that everything we have is on loan from Allah and that every soul returns to Him.

Is it only for death?

No. Muslims say it at the news of a death, but the Qur'an (2:156) describes it as the words of the patient “when disaster strikes them,” so it is also said for any hardship, loss or shock.

What do you say after it?

The dua taught by Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), reported in Sahih Muslim, is: “Allahumma ajirni fi musibati wakhluf li khayran minha.”

Where is it in the Qur'an?

Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 156. Verses 155 to 157 speak about patience in trials and the reward of those who are patient.

How do you pronounce it?

In-naa lil-laa-hi wa in-naa i-lay-hi raa-ji-'oon. The ' is a short catch in the throat before “oon.”

Share freely. May Allah ease every grief.
