1st sajda in quran

Ist Sajda in Quran / The First Sajda in the Quran

The first sajda in the Quran, which is in Surah Al-A’raf, verse 206:

1st sajda in Quran

Indeed, those who are near your Lord are not prevented by arrogance from His worship, and they exalt Him, and to Him they prostrate. 1

This verse tells us about the angels who are near Allah (SWT), who are constantly worshipping Him, praising Him, and prostrating to Him. They do not have any pride or arrogance that would prevent them from obeying their Lord and Creator. They recognize His greatness and glory, and they humble themselves before Him.

This verse also implies a contrast between the angels and some of the human beings and jinn, who are arrogant and rebellious, and who refuse to prostrate to Allah (SWT), even though He created them and gave them many blessings. They follow their whims and desires, and they disobey their Lord and Creator. They do not acknowledge His greatness and glory, and they do not humble themselves before Him.

This verse also serves as a reminder and an invitation for us, as human beings, to follow the example of the angels, and to prostrate to Allah (SWT), whenever we recite or hear this verse, or any other verse that contains a sajda. This is called sajda at-tilawah, or the prostration of recitation. It is a sunnah (recommended) act of worship that was practiced by the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and his companions (RA).

1st sajda in Quran

The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said:

When you recite a verse of prostration from the Quran, then prostrate to Allah. 2

He also said:

When I recite a verse of prostration from the Quran, I cannot help but prostrate to Allah. 3

The sajda at-tilawah is a way of expressing our love, respect, and gratitude to Allah (SWT), who revealed the Quran to us. It is also a way of affirming our faith, obedience, and servitude to Allah (SWT), who is our Lord and Master. It is also a way of seeking His mercy, forgiveness, and guidance, as He is our Protector and Helper.

The sajda at-tilawah has many benefits and virtues. Some of them are:

It increases our humility and submission to Allah (SWT).
It increases our closeness and intimacy with Allah (SWT).
It increases our reward and status with Allah (SWT).
It decreases our sins and burdens with Allah (SWT).
It protects us from the evil of Shaytan and his allies.
It beautifies our faces and bodies on the Day of Judgment.
The sajda at-tilawah has some conditions and etiquettes that should be observed. Some of them are:

We should be in a state of purity (wudu or ghusl) when we perform it.
We should face the qibla (direction of the Ka’ba) when we perform it.
We should say takbir (Allahu akbar) when we go down for it.
We should place our forehead, nose, palms, knees, and toes on the ground when we perform it.
We should say subhana rabbiyal-a’la (glory be to my Lord, the most high) three times or more when we perform it.
We should say takbir again when we rise from it.
We should make dua (supplication) to Allah (SWT) when we perform it.
We should also know that there are 14 verses in the Quran that contain a sajda. They are:

Surah Al-A’raf 7:206
Surah Ar-Ra’d 13:15
Surah An-Nahl 16:50
Surah Bani Isra’il 17:109
Surah Maryam 19:58
Surah Al-Hajj 22:18
Surah Al-Hajj 22:77
Surah Al-Furqan 25:60
Surah An-Naml 27:26
Surah As-Sajdah 32:15
Surah Saad 38:24
Surah Fussilat 41:38
Surah An-Najm 53:62
Surah Al-Inshiqaq 84:21
We should try to memorize these verses and recite them often, and prostrate to Allah (SWT) whenever we do so, or whenever we hear them. This is a way of honoring the Quran, and honoring Allah (SWT), who revealed it.

We ask Allah (SWT) to make us among those who recite the Quran, understand it, act upon it, and prostrate to Him with sincerity and devotion. Ameen.
