How to Perform Hajj

Step-by-step guide for all 5 days · Based on authentic Islamic scholarship

🕌
Types of Hajj
Choose your type before beginning

1. Hajj Qirān — Enter iḥrām with intention for both Umrah AND Hajj together. One single iḥrām for both. After completing Umrah in Makkah, remain in iḥrām until the end of Hajj.

2. Hajj Tamattu' — Enter iḥrām for Umrah only. After completing Umrah and halaq/qasr, remove iḥrām. Re-enter iḥrām before 8th Zul Hijjah for Hajj. (Most common for travelers)

3. Hajj Ifrād — Enter iḥrām for Hajj only. No Umrah combined. Remain in iḥrām until end of Hajj.

🛁
Preparation (Before 8th Zul Hijjah)
Complete by 7th Zul Hijjah

For Hajj Tamattu' pilgrims: Complete all preparations by the morning of 8th Zul Hijjah.

• Perform ghusl (full bath) and put on the two sheets of ihrām. Women wear normal modest clothing.
• Go to Al-Masjid al-Ḥarām and perform two rak'āt with head covered.
• Sit bareheaded and make niyyah (intention) of Hajj and recite Talbiyah.
• Your ihrām is now complete — certain things become impermissible.

Intention for Hajj
اَللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أُرِيدُالْحَجَّ فَيَسِّرْهُ لِيْ وَتَقَبَّلْهُ مِنِّيْ
Allāhumma innī urīdul-Ḥajja fayassir-hu lī wa taqabbal-hu minnī
"O Allah, I intend to perform Hajj — make it easy for me and accept it from me."
Mas'alah: For Hajj Tamattu', you can enter iḥrām for Hajj anytime before 8th Zul Hijjah. It is most virtuous (afdhal) to make the niyyah in Al-Masjid al-Ḥarām.
Day 1 — 8th Zul Hijjah
Proceed to Mina after sunrise

Leave for Minā after sunrise — not before — with Talbiyah flowing from your lips. This is the Sunnah way.

Sunnah Spend the night in Minā. Perform Ẓuhr, 'Asr, Maghrib, 'Ishā' and next day's Fajr in Minā.

There are no prescribed rituals on this day. Recite Talbiyah excessively. Spend every moment in ibādah, dhikr, istighfār, Qur'ān recitation, and durūd.

💡 Musāfir (traveller) ruling: If you stayed less than 15 days in Makkah before 8th Zul Hijjah, you are a traveller (musāfir) and will perform qasr — 2 rak'āt farḍ for Ẓuhr, 'Asr, and 'Ishā'.
Note: Eat lightly while in Minā. Fruit and liquids are recommended. Avoid heavy meals — it will help you greatly.
🌄
Day 2 — 9th Zul Hijjah
THE GREATEST DAY — Wuqūf of Arafāt

Leave for Arafāt after sunrise. On the way, recite Talbiyah, du'ā, durūd, dhikr and takbīr abundantly.

On reaching Arafāt, make all necessary preparations before Ẓuhr time. Relieve yourself of all necessities before the time of wuqūf.

FARDH You must spend even a little portion of time in Arafāt between Ẓuhr and dawn of 10th Zul Hijjah.
WAJIB Remain in Arafāt until sunset.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT perform Maghrib in Arafāt. Leave for Muzdalifah after sunset. Perform Maghrib and 'Ishā' together in Muzdalifah at 'Ishā' time.
🌟 Best Dhikr at Arafāt
Lā ilāha illallāhu waḥdahu lā sharīka lahu, lahul-mulku wa lahul-ḥamdu, yuḥyī wa yumītu wa huwa 'alā kulli shay'in qadīr
"There is no god but Allah alone, no partner has He. To Him belongs the dominion and to Him belongs all praise. He gives life and He causes death, and He is over all things All-Powerful."

There is no day on which Allah sets free more souls from the fire of Hell than on the day of Arafāt. And on that day Allah draws near to the earth and by way of exhibition His pride remarks to the angels: "What is the desire of these servants of mine?" — Muslim

In Muzdalifah

After sunset: Travel to Muzdalifah reciting Talbiyah and dhikr.

WAJIB Perform Maghrib and 'Ishā' together in Muzdalifah at 'Ishā' time — one adhān, one iqāmah.

Collect 49–70 pebbles (pea-sized) for pelting the Jamarāt:

📿 Pebble count:
10th Zul Hijjah — 7 pebbles
11th Zul Hijjah — 21 pebbles
12th Zul Hijjah — 21 pebbles
13th Zul Hijjah (optional) — 21 pebbles
🪨
Day 3 — 10th Zul Hijjah
'Eid al-Adha — The Day of Sacrifice

Perform Fajr Salāh as soon as its time commences in Muzdalifah. Remain in ibādah until just before sunrise.

Leave for Minā 2–3 minutes before sunrise.

⚡ Remember the Code: "P.A.S.S."

For Hajj Qirān & Hajj Tamattu' — this sequence is WAJIB

PPelting
AAnimal Sacrifice
SShaving
SSa'ee if due

① Ramee — Pelting

WAJIB Throw 7 pebbles at the Jamaratul-'Uqbā (Large Shayṭān only) on this day.

Method: Stand ~2.5 yards away. Masjid Khayf to your right, Makkah to your left. Throw each pebble one at a time with right hand saying بِسْمِ اللهِ اللهُ أَكْبَرُ

Mas'alah: With the throwing of the first pebble, STOP reciting Talbiyah. You may continue other dhikr. If all 7 pebbles are thrown together, it counts as only 1.

② Nahr — Animal Sacrifice

WAJIB For Hajj Qirān & Tamattu'. Mustahab for Hajj Ifrād.

Sacrifice can be done anytime after Ramee until sunset of 12th Zul Hijjah.

③ Halaq/Qasr — Shaving/Trimming

WAJIB Shave (preferred) or trim at least 1 inch of hair all around. Sit facing Qiblah, start from right side. Women: trim slightly more than 1 inch from the end of hair.

Important: Many people clip only a few hairs. This is NOT sufficient. You must shave/trim at least a quarter of the head. All iḥrām restrictions remain until proper halaq.

④ Ṭawāf al-Ziyārah

FARDH Hajj is incomplete without this Ṭawāf. Perform it in Makkah. After completing it, ALL iḥrām restrictions are lifted including marital relations.

Time: From dawn of 10th until sunset of 12th Zul Hijjah. Best to do on 10th.

VERY IMPORTANT: A woman in menses may delay this Ṭawāf but it is NEVER waived. She must return to Makkah when pure — even if months later.

After Ṭawāf: Offer 2 rak'āt at Maqām Ibrāhīm, make du'ā at Multazam, drink Zamzam, perform Sa'ee if not done previously.

Dua — Drinking Zamzam
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا وَرِزْقًا وَاسِعًا وَشِفَاءً مِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ
Allāhumma innī as'aluka 'ilman nāfi'an wa rizqan wāsi'an wa shifā'an min kulli dā'
"O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, abundant sustenance, and cure from every illness."
🪨
Day 4 — 11th Zul Hijjah
Ramee of all 3 Jamarāt

WAJIB Throw 7 pebbles at each of the three Jamarāt: Small, Middle, and Large.

Time: From Ẓuhr until dawn of next day. Best time: Zawāl to Maghrib. Makrūh after Maghrib.

Mas'alah: Do NOT pelt before Zawāl on 11th or 12th — it will be invalid and must be repeated.

Method:

Small Jamarāh (nearest to Masjid Khayf): 7 pebbles, then face Qiblah and make a long du'ā (equivalent of 20 Qur'ānic verses).

Middle Jamarāh: 7 pebbles, then face Qiblah and make long du'ā again.

Large Jamarāh (Jamaratul-'Uqbā): 7 pebbles only — NO du'ā after this one. Leave directly.

✨ After pelting: Return to your camp and spend the night in Minā. The night in Minā is far more virtuous than any hotel in Makkah.
🪨
Day 5 — 12th Zul Hijjah
Ramee + Departure from Minā

Follow the exact same procedure as Day 4 (11th Zul Hijjah). Pelt all three Jamarāt after Zawāl.

⚠️ Common Misconception: Many pilgrims rush to leave Minā before sunset. The obligation to pelt on 13th Zul Hijjah only applies if you remain in Minā until dawn (Fajr) of 13th. Leaving before dawn after completing 12th pelting is perfectly valid.
Advice: Do Ramee after 'Asr to avoid the worst crowds. You may even delay until after Maghrib if needed — it is makrūh but valid. Harming other Muslims is ḥarām.

If you cannot leave before dawn of 13th, it becomes WAJIB to perform Ramee on 13th Zul Hijjah as well.

Day 6 — 13th Zul Hijjah
Optional but highly meritorious

Ramee on 13th is not wājib (unless you stayed until dawn) but is greatly meritorious.

If you choose to pelt, follow the same method as Day 4. Best time: from Zawāl to sunset.

🌟 Alhamdulillah — All rites of Hajj are now complete!
May Almighty Allah accept your Hajj and shower His blessings upon you and your family. Āmīn.
🕌
Ṭawāf al-Widā' — Farewell Ṭawāf
The last act before leaving Makkah

WAJIB When you decide to leave Makkah, perform Ṭawāf al-Widā' (7 circuits around the Ka'bah). Best to do right before departure.

After Ṭawāf:
① Offer 2 rak'āt at Maqām Ibrāhīm
② Go to Zamzam well — drink to your fill facing Qiblah in 3 draughts
③ Go to Multazam — place chest and right cheek against the wall, cling to its cloth, shed tears, repent, seek forgiveness

Du'ā at Multazam
رَبَّنَا وَتَقَبَّلْ دُعَاءَ
Rabbanā wa taqabbal du'ā
"O our Lord! And accept my Prayer." (Qur'ān 14:40)
Mas'alah: If one returns home without Ṭawāf al-Widā', a dam becomes obligatory. A woman in menses is exempt — she may leave without it.

Leave with a heart filled with sadness and longing — you do not know if you will ever return to these blessed places again.

🤲 We ask Allah to accept your Hajj Mabrūr. May every step you took count as sadaqa, every du'ā be answered, and may you return as pure as the day you were born. Āmīn.

Hajj Tips & Advice

Practical wisdom to make your Hajj easier and spiritually enriching

🎒
Pack Light
A sheet, sleeping bag, one change of clothes, soap, tissue, and towel is all you need in Minā. Heavy luggage is a burden in the intense heat and crowds.
💧
Hydration is Everything
Drink water constantly — even before feeling thirsty. The heat in Makkah can be extreme. Carry a small water bottle at all times. Eat fruits and stay on light meals in Minā.
Timing for Ramee
Pelt the Jamarāt after 'Asr to avoid peak crowds. If needed, delay until after Maghrib. Women, elderly, and sick: pelt at night for safety — all times are valid for them.
🚌
Private Transport
Arrange private transport for the 5 days of Hajj in advance. This relieves enormous difficulty in getting between Minā, Arafāt, and Muzdalifah.
🔍
Do Not Wander in Arafāt
Stay at your tent! The plains are vast and tents look identical. Losing your way can waste precious wuqūf time. Similarly, avoid venturing to Jabal al-Raḥmah in the crowd.
🌙
Night in Minā is Sacred
Do not trade the blessed nights of Minā for hotel comfort in Makkah. The night in Minā carries immense spiritual value. Stay in Minā as the Prophet ﷺ did.
🤍
Guard Your Tongue
In Arafāt and throughout Hajj: no arguments, no useless talk. Weep, make du'ā, seek forgiveness. You may never get this opportunity again. Waste not a single moment.
🚽
Toilet Before Muzdalifah
Relieve yourself before departing Arafāt for Muzdalifah. Toilet facilities in Muzdalifah are extremely scarce and the queues during peak times can be hours long.
📱
Emergency Numbers
Save the phone number of your hotel/kafīla, a family member at home, and emergency services. Also write your hotel address in Arabic on a card and keep it on you at all times.
🕐
Check Fajr Time Carefully
Know the exact Fajr time for Muzdalifah. Many pilgrims pray Fajr before its time and leave early, missing the wājib wuqūf of Muzdalifah — incurring dam. Your local Fajr time applies.
✂️
Proper Halaq/Qasr
Do not clip just a few hairs. At minimum trim/shave a quarter of the whole head all around. Women trim at least 1 inch from the tips of their hair. Improper halaq means you remain in iḥrām.
💛
Sign of Accepted Hajj
The sign of a Mabrūr Hajj is a changed life. Upon return, be punctual in your obligations to Allah, increase love for the Ākhirah, and reduce attachment to worldly pleasures.
