The Harvard Islamic Finance Program (HIFP) is an initiative that aims to promote the academic study and research of Islamic finance and economics. It was established in 1995 by a group of Harvard faculty members from different disciplines, such as law, economics, business, and Islamic studies. The HIFP has three main objectives:
- To provide a platform for scholars, researchers, and industry professionals to exchange ideas and information about Islamic finance and economics.
- To compile and disseminate specialized bibliographies, databases, publications, and other resources on Islamic finance and economics.
- To foster dialogue and understanding among different stakeholders, such as academics, practitioners, regulators, and policymakers.
Objectives of Harvard islamic finance program
The HIFP has several activities and projects that support its objectives. Some of them are:
The Islamic Finance Information Program (IFIP), which is a web-based service that provides access to various sources of information on Islamic finance and economics, such as books, articles, reports, news, events, and organizations. The IFIP also publishes a quarterly newsletter called the Harvard Islamic Finance Information Program Newsletter (HIFIPN).
The Harvard-LSE Workshop on Islamic Finance and Economics, which is an annual event that brings together scholars and experts from Harvard University and the London School of Economics and Political Science to discuss current issues and challenges in the field of Islamic finance and economics.
The Harvard Forum on Islamic Finance, which is a biennial conference that attracts participants from academia, industry, government, and civil society to explore the theory and practice of Islamic finance in various contexts and regions.
The Alwaleed Bin Talal Seminar in Islamic Studies, which is a series of lectures that features world-class experts on topics ranging from Islamic law and theology to contemporary politics and Islam in America and West Africa.
The Alwaleed Bin Talal Undergraduate Thesis Prize in Islamic Studies, which is an award that recognizes the best undergraduate thesis on any aspect of Islamic studies at Harvard College.
The Alwaleed Bin Talal Postdoctoral Fellowship in Islamic Studies, which is a one-year fellowship that supports the research of a scholar who has recently completed a PhD in any field related to Islamic studies.
The HIFP is affiliated with the Center for Middle Eastern Studies (CMES) at Harvard University.
