Allah’s Throne: The Greatest of His Creations
Allah (SWT) is the Lord of the worlds, the Creator of everything, and the Owner of the most magnificent throne. His throne (Al-Arsh) is a sign of His majesty, power, and authority over all things. It is the largest and most splendid of His creations, and it encompasses the heavens and the earth. Allah (SWT) has revealed some details about His throne in the Quran and the Hadith, which help us to appreciate His greatness and glory.
The Quran mentions the throne some 25 times (33 times as Al-Arsh), such as in verse 10:3 and 23:116:
Surely your Lord is Allah Who created the heavens and the earth in six Days, then established Himself on the Throne, conducting every affair. None can intercede except by His permission. That is Allah—your Lord, so worship Him ˹alone˺. Will you not then be mindful? — Surah Yunus 10:31
Exalted is Allah, the True King! There is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except Him, the Lord of the Honourable Throne. — Surah Al-Mu’minun 23:1161
These verses show that Allah (SWT) is above His throne, and that He has full control and knowledge of everything that happens in His creation. He is the only one who deserves to be worshipped, and He is the only one who can grant intercession to His servants.
The Quran also tells us that Allah (SWT) created His throne before He created the heavens and the earth, and that He placed it over water:
And it is He who created the heavens and the earth in six days – and His Throne had been upon water… — Surah Hud 11:71
The Prophet (SAW) explained this verse by saying:
He was above the clouds, below which was air, and above which was air and water. Then He created His Throne above the water. — Sunan Ibn Majah
The water that Allah (SWT) placed His throne over is not like the water that we know in this world. It is a special creation of Allah (SWT) that has no resemblance to anything else.
The Quran also describes the angels who carry the throne of Allah (SWT) and praise His glory:
Those ˹angels˺ who carry the Throne and those around it glorify the praises of their Lord, have faith in Him, and seek forgiveness for the believers, ˹praying:˺ “Our Lord! You encompass everything in ˹Your˺ mercy and knowledge. So forgive those who repent and follow Your Way, and protect them from the torment of the Hellfire. — Surah Ghafir 40:71
You will see the angels all around the Throne, glorifying the praises of their Lord, for judgment will have been passed on all with fairness. And it will be said,1 “Praise be to Allah—Lord of all worlds!” — Surah Az-Zumar 39:751
These verses show that there are angels who are assigned to carry the throne of Allah (SWT), and that they are constantly worshipping Him and making dua for the believers. The Prophet (SAW) informed us about how huge these angels are:
I have been permitted to tell about one of Allah’s angels who bears the throne that the distance between the lobe of his ear and his shoulder is a journey of seven hundred years. — Sunan Abi Dawud
This shows how immense and magnificent the throne of Allah (SWT) is, that it requires such enormous angels to carry it.
The Quran also mentions another creation of Allah (SWT) that is related to His throne, which is called Al-Kursi (the Footstool). It is mentioned in Ayat Al-Kursi (the Verse of the Footstool), which is regarded as one of the greatest verses in the Quran:
Allah – there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great. — Surah Al-Baqarah 2:2551
This verse tells us that Allah (SWT) is the only true God, who is eternal, self-sufficient, and all-knowing. He has no weakness or deficiency, and He has absolute sovereignty and authority over His creation. His Kursi is a vast and magnificent creation that extends over the heavens and the earth, and it shows His majesty and power.
The Prophet (SAW) explained the difference between the throne and the footstool by saying:
The seven heavens and the earth and all that is therein glorify Him, and there is not a thing but hymns His praise; but you understand not their glorification. Lo! He is ever Clement, Forgiving. And when you recite the Qur’an, We place between you and those who believe not in the Hereafter a hidden barrier; And We put coverings on their hearts and deafness in their ears lest they should understand it, and when you make mention of your Lord alone in the Qur’an, they turn their backs in aversion.
We are Best Aware of what they wish to hear when they give ear to you and when they take secret counsel, when the evil-doers say: You follow but a man bewitched. See what similitudes they coin for you, and thus are all astray, and cannot find a road! And they say: When we are bones and fragments, shall we forsooth, be raised up as a new creation? Say: Be ye stones or iron Or some created thing that is yet greater in your thoughts!
Then they will say: Who shall bring us back (to life). Say: He Who created you at the first. Then will they shake their heads at you, and say: When will it be? Say: It will perhaps be soon; A day when He will call you and ye will answer with His praise, and ye will think that ye have tarried but a little while. The seven heavens are like a ring in a desert in relation to the Kursi or the footstool of Allah, and likewise the Kursi is like a ring in a desert in relation to “the Throne” — Sahih Muslim
This hadith shows how vast and incomparable the throne of Allah (SWT) is, that it makes the seven heavens and the earth look like a ring in a desert. It also shows how ignorant and arrogant the disbelievers are, who deny the resurrection and mock the messenger of Allah (SWT).
The Quran also tells us that Allah (SWT) has written His mercy over His throne:
When Allah completed the creation, He wrote in His Book which is with Him on His Throne, “My Mercy overpowers My Anger.” — Sahih Bukhari
This shows that Allah (SWT) is the most merciful of all, and that He prefers to forgive His servants rather than punish them. He has recorded this attribute of His on His throne, which is the source of all blessings and grace.
Finally, the Quran and the Hadith tell us that there is a special place in Paradise that is directly under the throne of Allah (SWT), which is called Al-Firdaws (the Highest Garden). It is the highest level of Paradise, where the most beloved and righteous servants of Allah (SWT) will dwell:
Paradise has one hundred grades, each of which is as big as the distance between heaven and earth. The highest of them is Firdaws and the best of them is Firdaws. The Throne is above Firdaws and from it spring forth the rivers of Paradise. If you ask of Allah, ask Him for Firdaws. — Sunan Ibn Majah
This shows that Allah (SWT) has prepared a great reward for those who believe in Him and obey Him. They will enjoy His pleasure and bounty under His throne, where they will see His face and hear His speech.
We ask Allah (SWT) to make us among those who believe in Him, worship Him alone, follow His messenger (SAW), and attain His mercy and forgiveness. We ask Him to grant us Al-Firdaws under His throne in Paradise. Ameen.
