Hadith about spending money.

As a Muslim we should spend money on our family, on our loved ones and even on ourself. We should not be stingy and should not hoard money. I was contemplating on this beautiful hadith,

hadith about spending money on family

The most excellent dinar is one that a person spends on his family

Thauban bin Bujdud (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “The most excellent dinar is one that a person spends on his family, and the dinar which he spends on his riding-animal in the way of Allah (in Jihad), and the dinar he spends on his companions in the way of Allah”.[Muslim].

hadith about spending money
Hadith about spending money

Thauban reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:The most excellent dinar is one that a person spends on his family, and the dinar which he spends on his animal in Allah’s path, and the dinar he spends on his companions in Allah’s path. Abu Qilaba (one of the narrators) said: He (the narrator) started with family, and then Abu Qilaba said: Who is the person with greater reward than a person who spends on young members of his family (and thus) preserves (saves them from want) (and by virtue of which) Allah brings profit for them and makes them rich.

sahih muslim 994

In al-Bukhaari (55) and Muslim (1002) it is narrated from Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “When a man spends on his family, hoping for reward, that is (counted as) an act of charity for him.”

Isn’t this beautiful.

What does Allah say about spending?

  1. Surah Al-Baqarah (2:261): “The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.” This verse illustrates the concept of spiritual growth and abundance that comes from spending in charity.
  2. Surah Al-Isra (17:26-27): “And give the relative his right, and [also] the poor and the traveler, and do not spend wastefully. Indeed, the wasteful are brothers of the devils, and ever has Satan been to his Lord ungrateful.” These verses emphasize the importance of responsible spending, ensuring that charity is given to those in need while avoiding extravagance and wastefulness.
  3. “And those who, when they spend, are neither extravagant nor niggardly, but hold a medium (way) between those (extremes)” [al-Furqaan 25:67]

How much to spend money?

Ibn Battaal (may Allah have mercy on him) said: he should spend on himself, on his wife and on those on whom he is obliged to spend without being stingy or extravagant in that

Ibn al-Mundhir said: The scholars are unanimously agreed that spending on poor parents who have no income or wealth is an obligation on the child’s wealth.
