Are earthquakes a sign of Allah?

in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:164), it is stated:

“Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of the night and the day, and the [great] ships which sail through the sea with that which benefits people, and what Allah has sent down from the heavens of rain, giving life thereby to the earth after its lifelessness and dispersing therein every [kind of] moving creature, and [His] directing of the winds and the clouds controlled between the heaven and the earth are signs for a people who use reason.”

This verse highlights the various natural phenomena as signs of Allah’s existence and power.

In the Islamic tradition, there are several hadiths or narrations of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) that shed light on earthquakes and their significance.

Earthquake a Mercy to the Ummah

Narrated Abu Musa:The Prophet (ﷺ) said: This people of mine is one to which mercy is shown. It will have no punishment in the next world, but its punishment in this world will be trials, earthquakes and being killed. Sunan Abi Dawud 4278

Earthquake Hadith in Jami` at-Tirmidhi

Abu Hurairah narrated that the Messenger of Allah(s.a.w) said:

“When Al-Fai’ is distributed(preferentially), trust is a spoil of war, Zakat is a fine, knowledge is sought for other than the(sake of the) religion, a man obeys his wife and disobeys his mother, he is close to his friend and far from his father,

voices are raised in the Masajid, tribes are led by their wicked, the leader of the people is the most despicable among them, the most honored man is the one whose evil the people are afraid of, singing slave-girls and music spread, intoxicants are drunk, and the end of this Ummah curses its beginning-then anticipate a red wind, earthquake, collapsing of the earth, transformation, Qadhf, and the signs follow in succession like gems of a necklace whose string is cut and so they fall in succession.” (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2211)

Narrated Ibn `Umar: (The Prophet) said, “O Allah! Bless our Sham and our Yemen.” People said, “Our Najd as well.” The Prophet again said, “O Allah! Bless our Sham and Yemen.” They said again, “Our Najd as well.” On that the Prophet (ﷺ) said, “There will appear earthquakes and afflictions, and from there will come out the side of the head of Satan.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 1037)

Earthquake hadith 2

Narrated Abu Huraira:Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said,

“The Hour will not be established

• (1) till two big groups fight each other whereupon there will be a great number of casualties on both sides and they will be following one and the same religious doctrine,
• (2) till about thirty Dajjals (liars) appear, and each one of them will claim that he is Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ),
• (3) till the religious knowledge is taken away (by the death of Religious scholars)
• (4) earthquakes will increase in number
• (5) time will pass quickly,
• (6) afflictions will appear,
• (7) Al-Harj, (i.e., killing) will increase,
• (8) till wealth will be in abundance —- so abundant that a wealthy person will worry lest nobody should accept his Zakat, and whenever he will present it to someone, that person (to whom it will be offered) will say, ‘I am not in need of it,
• (9) till the people compete with one another in constructing high buildings,
• (10) till a man when passing by a grave of someone will say, ‘Would that I were in his place
• (11) and till the sun rises from the West.

So when the sun will rise and the people will see it (rising from the West) they will all believe (embrace Islam) but that will be the time when: (As Allah said,) ‘No good will it do to a soul to believe then, if it believed not before, nor earned good (by deeds of righteousness) through its Faith.’ (6.158)

And the Hour will be established while two men spreading a garment in front of them but they will not be able to sell it, nor fold it up; and the Hour will be established when a man has milked his she-camel and has taken away the milk but he will not be able to drink it; and the Hour will be established before a man repairing a tank (for his livestock) is able to water (his animals) in it; and the Hour will be established when a person has raised a morsel (of food) to his mouth but will not be able to eat it.”

Hadith about Earthquake: Those who die from earthquake is martyr

Earthquake Martyrs:

Is there a special status for those who die in earthquakes according to Islamic teachings?

It has been narrated on the authority of Abu Huraira that the, Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

While a man walks along a path, finds a thorny twig lying on the way and puts it aside, Allah would appreciate it and forgive him The Prophet (ﷺ) said: The martyrs are of five kinds: one who dies of plague; one who dies of diarrhoea (or cholera) ; one who is drowned; one who is buried under debris and one who dies fighting in the way of Allah.

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى، قَالَ قَرَأْتُ عَلَى مَالِكٍ عَنْ سُمَىٍّ، عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏”‏ بَيْنَمَا رَجُلٌ يَمْشِي بِطَرِيقٍ وَجَدَ غُصْنَ شَوْكٍ عَلَى الطَّرِيقِ فَأَخَّرَهُ فَشَكَرَ اللَّهُ لَهُ فَغَفَرَ لَهُ ‏”‏ ‏.‏ وَقَالَ ‏”‏ الشُّهَدَاءُ خَمْسَةٌ الْمَطْعُونُ وَالْمَبْطُونُ وَالْغَرِقُ وَصَاحِبُ الْهَدْمِ وَالشَّهِيدُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ ‏”‏ ‏.‏

Sahih Muslim 1914

 Nabi ﷺ mentioned “saahib al-hadm”. This may be translated as one who dies or is buried under debris or by something collapsing on him. Accordingly, it is hoped that victims of earthquakes would be included in this.
