What is Suhoor?

Suhoor or Sehri, is the pre-dawn meal consumed by Muslims before the Fajr (dawn) prayer during the month of Ramadan. it provides the necessary sustenance for individuals to endure the day-long fasting that begins at dawn and concludes at sunset. Suhoor is an emphasised sunnah of the daily routine for those observing Ramadan. Eating suhoor gives physical strength to engage in worship and fulfill their daily responsibilities.

Ramadan fast are acts of worship. Reading Suhoor dua and Iftar dua increases the blessing and acceptance.

Suhoor Dua : Dua for Suhoor, starting fast in Ramadan:

The Dua for Suhoor often includes requests for strength, patience, and guidance throughout the day’s fast. It reflects the fasting individual’s desire to draw nearer to Allah and seek His blessings.

بِصَوْمِ غَدٍ نَّوَيْتُ مِنْ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ

Bi-sawmi ghadin nawaitu min shahri Ramadan.

I intend to keep the fast for tomorrow in the month of Ramadan

Iftar Dua : Dua for breaking fast/ dua for opening fast

Iftar marks the end of the fast from dawn to sunset. It is a time when Muslims eagerly anticipate the moment they can consume food and drink after a day of abstinence.

Iftar Dua:

اللَّهُمَّ اِنِّى لَكَ صُمْتُ وَبِكَ امنْتُ وَعَليْكَ تَوَكّلتُ وَ عَلى رِزْقِكَ اَفْطَرْتُ

Allahumma inni laka sumtu wa bika amantu wa ‘alaika tawakkaltu wa ‘ala rizqika aftartu.

O, Allah! I fasted for You and I believe in You and I put my trust in You and I break my fast with Your sustenance

Virtue of Reading dua of fasting

Reading dua in Suhoor and Iftar is an emphasised sunnah. Reading Suhoor dua or Iftar dua begins with expressing gratitude to Allah for the food and blessings bestowed upon the believer. It serves as a reminder of the countless blessings that we often take for granted, such as the availability of food, clean water, and good health. By expressing gratitude, we acknowledge the mercy and generosity of Allah, deepening their sense of appreciation and humility.

What other dua can you read in Suhur?

At the time of suhur, One can recite as much as Quran as possible. Suhur is the time of Tahajjud. So to maximise the barakah of tahajjud, one can wake up early and recite a few portion of Quran and read Tahajjud. This time is also the acceptance of dua. As it is said that the time of tahajjud is also the best time to make dua for all your matters related to Deen and Dunya.
