The LINEAGE Of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him):Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to Adnan

Few days back I was discussing the lineage of our dear Prophet (pbuh) with some of my friends, some people traced his lineage to Adnan and some to Adam(AH).It was then I thought to research on this topic.Intrestingly both were right as with further research I found out that With respect to the lineage of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him), there are three versions:

  • The first was authenticated by biographers and genealogists and states that Muhammad PBUH’s genealogy has been traced to ‘Adnan.
  • The second is subject to controversies and doubt, and traces his lineage beyond ‘Adnan back to Abraham.
  • The third version, with some parts definitely incorrect, traces his
lineage beyond Abraham back to Adam (Peace be upon him)

I also got hold of a rare Quranic Adam and eve geneology chart which was earlier available in amazon but now you will only find the Bible Adam and Eve geneology chart which is quite different.

Read the Story of Birth of Prophet Muhammad SAW

All prophets are infact paternal brothers.

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Apostle said, “Both in this world and in the Hereafter, I am the nearest of all the people to Jesus, the son of Mary. The prophets are paternal brothers; their mothers are different, but their religion is one.” Sahih Bukhari, book 55,hadith 652.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH )to Adnan

According to Islamic prophetic tradition, Muhammad was descended from Adnan. Tradition records the genealogy from Adnan to Muhammad comprises 21 generations. “The following is the list of chiefs who are said to have ruled the Hejaz and to have been the patrilineal ancestors of Muhammad.”

  • 570 CE – Muhammad
  • 545 CE – Abdullah
  • 497 CE – Abdul-Muttalib
  • 464 CE – Hashim
  • 439 CE – Abd Manaf
  • 406 CE – Qusai
  • 373 CE – Kilab
  • 340 CE – Murrah
  • 307 CE – Ka’ab
  • 274 CE – Lu’ay
  • 241 CE – Ghalib
  • 208 CE – Fihr
  • 175 CE – Malik
  • 142 CE – An-Nadr (Quraysh)
  • 109 CE – Kinanah
  •   76 CE – Khuzaimah
  •   43 CE – Mudrikah
  •   10 CE – Ilyas
  •   23 BCE – Mudar
  •   56 BCE – Nizar
  •   89 BCE – Ma’ad
  • 122 BCE – Adnan

Adnan to Isma’il

Various genealogies of Adnan up to Isma’il (AS) have been narrated. Adnan was the ancestor of the Adnani Arabs of northern, central and western Arabia and a direct descendant of Isma’il (AS). It is not confirmed how many generation are between them, however Adnan was fairly close to Isma’il AS. Isma’il (AS)had twelve sons who are said to have become twelve tribal chiefs throughout the regions from Havilah to Shur (from Assyria to the border of Egypt).

Genealogists differ from which son of Isma’il the main line of descent came, either through his eldest son Nabut, or his second son Qedar who was the father of the North Arabian Qedarite tribe that controlled the region between the Persian Gulf and the Sinai Peninsula. Genealogists also differ in the names on the line of descent.

Muhammad ibn Jarir al-Tabari states:”The genealogists do not differ concerning the descent of our Prophet Muhammad as far as Ma’add b. ‘Adnan.”— The History of al-Tabari, Volume 6, p. 37

Ibrahim AS to Nuh AS

Abd Allah ibn Abbas narrated Muhammad (pbuh)said;

“The descendants of Imran, mentioned in Allah’s saying, ‘Allah did choose Adam and Nuh, the family of Ibrahim, and the family of Imran above all people,-‘ [Quran 03:33] are the believers among sons of Ibrahim, Imran, Yasin and Muhammad”— Related by Bukhari.

“And We sent Noah and Abraham, and established in their line Prophethood and Revelation: and some of them were on right guidance. But many of them became rebellious transgressors.”— Qur’an, chapter 57 (Al-Hadid), verse 26.

It is unclear how many generations are between Ibrahim and Nuh. Nuh’s son Sam was the ancestor of the Semitic race.

  • Ibrahim
  • Ta’rih (Azar)
  • Tahur
  • Shahru’
  • Abraghu
  • Falikh
  • Abir
  • Shalikh
  • Arfakshad
  • Sam
  • Nuh[3]

Nuh AS to Adam AS

Abd Allah ibn Abbas narrated Muhammad said;

“Between Nuh and Adam were ten generations, all of them were upon Sharia of the truth, then they differed. So Allah sent prophets as bringers of good news and as warners.”— Related by Hakim al-Nishaburi in Al-Mustadrak alaa al-Sahihain.

  • Nuh
  • Lumik
  • Mutu Shalkh
  • Akhnukh (Idris)
  • Yarid
  • Mahla’il
  • Qainan
  • Anush
  • Sheeth
  • Adam

Note :

1) As for the fact, it is between Prophet PBUH and Adnan – that’s a fact.
2) From Adnan to Ismail – somewhat of a myth

3)From Ismail AS to Adam AS- this, complete lineage , we take it is from the Jewish Christian sources. We don’t have anything in our tradition about the lineage from Ismail AS and Ibrahim AS all the way back to the Prophet Adam
AS.

I wrote this article for the benefit of our readers who too get confused about the geneology of Prophet Muhammad(SAW).If you too would like to add some report or findings to it,it will be greatly appreciated.Jazak Allah Khair.

  1. None of these many scholars who write & trying to teach Islam are unfortunately a bit of “illiterates” religiously, if not maybe academically literate. They don’t even know that Names (being “NOUN”) cannot be translated, 2ndly how can they teach Islam when they distort our Prophets name into English names..!!?? The fact is that they should write / teach real names and English names within brackets; like MS Aafia has done correctly; i.e. Prophet Isa,AS (Jesus). & use “Allah” (God)…

  2. Hi there Aafia,

We hope you are in the best of health and Imaan.

We are a company based in London and we are looking to buy the Quranic Adam Lineage if possible as we have a huge interest within this field.

    Thanks
