Ghunna definition:

ghunna is nasalized sound that is produced from the nasal passage, and it doesn’t involve any movement or function of the tongue. This sound is inherent to the Arabic letters “ن” (noon) and “م” (meem), even if these letters have vowel markings (tanween) or not.

How to do Ghunna?

Ghunna involves producing a nasal sound. To achieve this, you need to allow air to pass through your nasal passages as you pronounce the letter. The sound should come from your nose, not your mouth.

The four types of Ghunna in Tajweed

  1. Most Complete (أكمل):
    • The Most Complete Ghunna is the longest and most pronounced form of Ghunna. It is typically found when pronouncing the letters “ن” and “م” with Shaddah over them. Additionally, it is observed during Idgham with Ghunnah if one of these letters (ن, م, ي, or و) is preceded by a noon Sakinah or a tanween.
    • Level: This Ghunna type requires the utmost precision and duration in nasalization.
  2. Complete (كاملة):
    • The Complete Ghunna is the second-longest form of Ghunna. It occurs in Al-Ikhfaa’ Alhaqiqi, Al-Ikhfaa’ Ash-Shafawi, and Al-Iqlab. These are specific scenarios where Ghunna is applied, and it is less extended in duration than the Most Complete Ghunna.
    • Level: Achieving the Complete Ghunna demands a solid understanding of when and how to apply it in various recitation situations.
  3. Incomplete (ناقصة):
    •  Incomplete Ghunna, often referred to as short Ghunna, is shorter in timing compared to the Complete Ghunna. This type is typically found when reciting the letters “ن” and “م” with Sukoon (a pause or stillness) over them. It’s also observed when applying Izhar.
    • Level: Proper execution of Incomplete Ghunna requires a keen sense of timing and precision.
  4. Most Incomplete (أنقص):
    •  The Most Incomplete Ghunna is the shortest of all types. It occurs when reciting the letters “ن” and “م” with vowels. The difference between this type and the Incomplete Ghunna primarily lies in the minimal timing of the nasalization.
    • Level: Mastery of the Most Incomplete Ghunna demands a high level of attention to minute details in pronunciation.
