Dua on hearing news of death of a Muslim

إِنَّا لِلّهِ وَإِنَّـا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعونَ

Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un

Verily we belong to Allah, and verily to Him do we return. [Quran 2:156]

When closing the eyes of the deceased

اللهُـمِّ اغْفِـرْ لِـفلان (باسـمه) وَارْفَعْ دَرَجَتَـهُ في المَهْـدِييـن ، وَاخْـلُفْـهُ في عَقِـبِهِ في الغابِـرين، وَاغْفِـرْ لَنـا وَلَـهُ يا رَبَّ العـالَمـين، وَافْسَـحْ لَهُ في قَبْـرِهِ وَنَـوِّرْ لَهُ فيه

Ad

Allāhumma’ghfir li (name of the person) warfa` darajatahu fi ‘l-mahdiyyīn, wakhlufhu fī `aqibihi fi ‘l-ghābirīn, wagh’fir-lanā wa lahu yā Rabba ‘l-`ālamīn, wafsaḥ lahu fī qabrihi wa nawwir lahu fīh.

O Allah, forgive [name of the person] and elevate his station among those who are guided. Send him along the path of those who came before, and forgive us and him, O Lord of the worlds. Enlarge for him his grave, and shed light upon him in it.Reference:Muslim 2/634.

Dua after burying the deceased

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ اللَّهُمَّ ثَبِّتْهُ

Allāhumma’ghfir lah Allāhumma thabbit’h. O Allah, forgive him. O Allah, strengthen him.Reference:The Prophet (ﷺ) used to stop after burying the dead and say to the people: “Ask Allah to forgive your brother and pray for him to be strengthened, for indeed he is now being questioned.”

Dua for Dua for those who passed away/ Dua for dead to wash him with water of snow and hail and cleanse him of sin

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ وَارْحَمْهُ وَعَافِهِ وَاعْفُ عَنْهُ وَأَكْرِمْ نُزُلَهُ وَأَوْسِعْ مُدْخَلَهُ وَاغْسِلْهُ بِالْمَاءِ وَالثَّلْجِ وَالْبَرَدِ وَنَقِّهِ مِنَ الْخَطَايَا كَمَا يُنَقَّى الثَّوْبُ الأَبْيَضُ مِنَ الدَّنَسِ ‏”‏ ‏

Allahummaghfir lahu warhamhu wa ‘afihi was a’fu ‘anhu, wa akrim nuzulahu wa wassi’ ,adkhalahu waghsilhu bil-ma’i wath-thalji wal-baradi wa naqqihi min al-khataya kama ynaqqath-thawb al-abyad min ad-danas

(O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, keep him safe and sound and forgive him, honor the place where he settles and make his entrance wide; wash him with water and snow and hail, and cleanse him of sin as a white garment is cleansed of dirt). Sunan an-Nasa’i 62

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِحَيِّنَا وَمَيِّتِنَا وَشَاهِدِنَا وَغَائِبِنَا وَذَكَرِنَا وَأُنْثَانَا وَصَغِيرِنَا وَكَبِيرِنَا ‏”‏

Allahummighfir lihayyina wa mayyitina wa shahidina wa gha’ibina wadhakarina wa unthana wa saghirina wa kabirina

O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those who are present among us and those who are absent, our males and our females, our young and our old Sunan an-Nasa’i 1986

Dua

Allāhumma `abduka wabnu ‘amatik iḥtāja ilā raḥmatik, wa anta ghaniyyun `an `adhābih, in kāna muḥsinan fazid fī ḥasanātih, wa in kāna musī’an fatajāwaz `anh. O Allah, Your male slave and the child of Your female slave is in need of Your mercy, and You are not in need of his torment. If he was pious then increase his rewards and if he was a transgressor then pardon him.Reference:Al-Hakim 1/359 who graded it authentic and Ath-Thahabi agreed with him. اللهُـمِّ عَبْـدُكَ وَابْنُ أَمَـتِك، احْتـاجَ إِلى رَحْمَـتِك، وَأَنْتَ غَنِـيٌّ عَنْ عَذابِـه، إِنْ كانَ مُحْـسِناً فَزِدْ في حَسَـناتِه، وَإِنْ كانَ مُسـيئاً فَتَـجاوَزْ عَنْـه

When the deceased is a child

“اللهم اجعله فرطاً وذخراً لوالديه ، وشفيعاً مجاباً . اللهم ثقل به موازينها وأعظم به أجورهما ، وألحقهُ بصالح المؤمنين ، واجعلهُ في كفالة إبراهيم ، وقه برحمتك عذاب الجحيم ، وأبدله داراً خيراً من داره ، وأهلاً خيراً من أهله ، اللهم اغفر لاسلافنا ، وأفراطنا ، ومن سبقنا بالإيمان ” فحسن

Allāhumma ‘j`alhu faraṭan wa dhukhran liwālidayh, wa shafī`an mujāban. Allāhumma thaqqil bihi mawāzīnahumā wa a`ẓim bihi ujūrahumā, wa alḥiqhu biṣāliḥi ‘l-mu’minīn, waj`alhu fī kafālati Ibrāhīm, wa qihi biraḥmatika `adhāba ‘l-jaḥīm, wa abdilhu dāran khayran min dārih, wa ahlan khayran min ahlih, Allāhumma’ghfir li aslāfinā wa afrāṭinā wa man sabaqanā bil īmān. O Allah, protect him from the torment of the grave. [It is also good to say:]

O Allah, make him a precursor, a forerunner and a treasure for his parents and an answered intercessor. O Allah, make him weigh heavily in their scales (of good) and magnify their reward. Make him join the righteous of the believers. Place him in the care of Ibrahim. Save him by Your mercy from the torment of Hell. Give him a home better than his home, and a family better than his family. O Allah, forgive those who have gone (i.e. passed away) before us, our children lost (by death), and those who have preceded us in Faith.

Condolence to the family of those who passed away

أعظم الله أجرك ، وأحسن عزاءك وغفر لميتك”

A`ẓamallāhu ajrak, wa ‘aḥsana `azā’ak, wa ghafara limayyitik.

May Allah magnify your reward, and make perfect your bereavement, and forgive your departed.
