What is the Khashiyat of Allah?
In the life of a believer, there is no feeling more profound, transformative, or grounding than thekhashiyat of Allah—the awe-inspired fear of our Creator. This is not a fear that stems from terror but from a deep recognition of Allah’s greatness, mercy, and power. It is a fear that compels us to love Him more, strive to please Him, and live with the constant awareness of His watchful presence.
The Quran and Sunnah highlight khashiyat as a distinguishing characteristic of the righteous. It is the inner light that guides believers, moulds their character, and directs their actions. It increases us in Taqwa
Understanding Khashiyat: Awe and Awareness
Meaning of word Khashiyat: The Arabic wordkhashiyatcomes from the rootkha-sha-ya, which denotes a fear coupled with knowledge and understanding. Unlike ordinary fear (khawf), which can arise from ignorance or a sense of danger, khashiyat is reserved for those who comprehend Allah’s attributes and reflect on His majesty.
Allah mentions in the Quran:
“Indeed, only those fear Allah, from among His servants, who have knowledge.”
(Surah Fatir: 28)
This verse beautifully ties khashiyat to knowledge (ilm). A person who truly knows Allah—through His names, His creation, and His signs—is naturally humbled. Khashiyat is not a paralyzing fear but one that motivates, purifies, and elevates.
The Quran on developing Khashiyat
The Quran repeatedly calls us to develop khashiyat as a core aspect of our relationship with Allah. Let us reflect on some of these verses:
- Fear as a Path to Mercy:“So fear Me, that you may be shown mercy.”(Surah Al-Baqarah: 2:40)Here, Allah ties His mercy to khashiyat, teaching us that a heart filled with awe and obedience opens the door to His blessings.
- A Characteristic of the Prophets:“They used to hasten to good deeds and supplicate Us in hope and fear. And they were humbly submissive to Us.”(Surah Al-Anbiya: 21:90) The prophets exemplified khashiyat, balancing hope (raja) and fear(khawf), embodying humility before Allah.
- The Impact on Hearts:“Has the time not come for those who have believed that their hearts should become humbly submissive at the remembrance of Allah and what has come down of the truth?” (Surah Al-Hadid: 57:16)This verse addresses believers directly, urging them to reflect on their hearts and develop khashiyat as a response to Allah’s guidance.
The Role of Khashiyat in a Believer’s Life
- A Source of Strength and Resolve:
Khashiyat instills Iman. When a believer fears Allah above all else, no worldly power or challenge can shake their faith. As the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:“Whoever fears Allah, He will make everything fear him; and whoever does not fear Allah, He will make him fear everything.”(Musnad Ahmad)This fear is empowering, not debilitating. It liberates us from the fear of creation, aligning our priorities with the Creator. - A Path to Sincerity:
Khashiyat fosters sincerity (ikhlas) in worship. Acts of devotion are no longer performed for show or recognition but solely to please Allah. This aligns with the Quranic directive:“Say, ‘Indeed, my prayer, my rites of sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the worlds.’”(Surah Al-An’am: 6:162) - Guarding Against Sin:
A heart that fears Allah naturally recoils from disobedience. Reflecting on Allah’s closeness and the inevitability of accountability makes sin less tempting. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:“Be mindful of Allah wherever you are.”(Tirmidhi) - Fostering Humility and Gratitude:
Khashiyat reminds us of our dependence on Allah, fostering gratitude for His endless blessings. This humility is a hallmark of the righteous.
Examples from the Lives of the Prophets
The lives of the Prophets are shining examples of khashiyat in action. Consider these moments:
- Prophet Musa (Moses) and the Burning Bush:
When Allah spoke to Musa (peace be upon him) from the burning bush, Musa AS’s immediate reaction was one of awe and submission:“I am Allah. There is no deity except Me, so worship Me and establish prayer for My remembrance.”(Surah Ta-Ha: 20:14)Musa AS’s khashiyat led him to fulfill his mission with unwavering dedication. - Prophet Muhammad’s Night of Worship:
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) would stand in prayer for long hours, to the point that his feet would swell. When asked why he exerted himself so much despite being forgiven, he replied:“Should I not be a grateful servant?”
(Bukhari, Muslim)His khashiyat manifested in profound gratitude and devotion.
Developing Khashiyat in Our Lives
Khashiyat is not an abstract concept; it is a quality we can cultivate through conscious effort. Here are practical steps:
- Reflect on Allah’s Names and Attributes:
Understanding names likeAl-Aziz(The Mighty),Ar-Rahman(The Most Merciful), andAl-Baseer(The All-Seeing) deepens our awareness of Allah’s majesty and presence. - Contemplate the Quran:
The Quran is a treasure trove of reminders about Allah’s greatness and mercy. Regular recitation and contemplation bring the heart to life. As Allah says:“And We have certainly made the Quran easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?” (Surah Al-Qamar: 54:17) - Engage in Dhikr and Dua:
Constant remembrance of Allah keeps the heart soft and connected. The Prophet (peace be upon him) encouraged saying:“O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and self-sufficiency.” (Muslim) - Remember Death and Accountability:
Frequent reflection on the Day of Judgment fosters khashiyat. The Prophet (peace be upon him) advised:“Remember often the destroyer of pleasures (death).”(Tirmidhi) - Surround Yourself with Righteous Company:
Good company inspires good habits. Being with those who remind us of Allah strengthens our connection to Him. - Spend your money in the path of Allah
Conclusion: The Fruit of Khashiyat
Khashiyat of Allah transforms our hearts, minds, and actions. It leads to tranquility in this world and unimaginable rewards in the Hereafter. Allah promises:
“And as for the one who feared standing before his Lord and restrained himself from impure evil desires and lusts, verily, Paradise will be his abode.”(Surah An-Nazi’at: 79:40-41)
May Allah grant us hearts filled with khashiyat, leading us to a life of righteousness and a place in His eternal gardens. Ameen.
