It is a sacred invitation echoing through the skies, calling us to reconnect with our Creator, Allah swt. The Adhaan (Islamic call to prayer) is far more than words; it is filled with spiritual wisdom, rewards, and Divine blessings.

What Is the Literal Meaning of Adhaan?

The word Adhaan in Arabic literally means to announce, to inform, or to call out. In Islamic terminology, Adhaan refers to the special set of words used to announce the arrival of prayer time and invite the believers to the masjid.

“وَمَنْ أَحْسَنُ قَوْلًا مِّمَّن دَعَا إِلَى اللَّهِ وَعَمِلَ صَالِحًا وَقَالَ إِنَّنِي مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ”
“And who is better in speech than one who calls to Allah and does righteousness and says, ‘Indeed, I am of the Muslims.’”

Benefits of Adhan/ Virtue of Adhan

1. Adhaan Causes Shaytaan to Flee

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“إِذَا نُودِيَ لِلصَّلَاةِ أَدْبَرَ الشَّيْطَانُ وَلَهُ ضُرَاطٌ حَتَّى لَا يَسْمَعَ التَّأْذِينَ، فَإِذَا قُضِيَ التَّأْذِينُ أَقْبَلَ، فَإِذَا ثُوِّبَ أَدْبَرَ، فَإِذَا قُضِيَ التَّثْوِيبُ أَقْبَلَ، حَتَّى يَخْطُرَ بَيْنَ الْمَرْءِ وَنَفْسِهِ”
“When the call to prayer is made, Shaytaan flees and passes wind so that he will not hear the call…”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 608, Sahih Muslim 389)

2. The Adhaan Prevents Bloodshed

“كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ إِذَا أَغَارَ بِاللَّيْلِ انْتَظَرَ، فَإِنْ سَمِعَ مُؤَذِّنًا كَفَّ عَنْهُمْ، وَإِنْ لَمْ يَسْمَعْ أَذَانًا أَغَارَ بَعْدَ مَا يُصْبِحُ”
“If I hear the Adhaan, I do not attack. If I do not hear it, I proceed.”
(Sahih Muslim 382)

3. Everything That Hears the Adhaan Will Testify for the Mu’adhdhin

“لَا يَسْمَعُ مَدَى صَوْتِ الْمُؤَذِّنِ جِنٌّ وَلَا إِنْسٌ وَلَا شَيْءٌ إِلَّا شَهِدَ لَهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ”
“No jinn, human or creature hears the voice of the Mu’adhdhin except that it will testify on his behalf on the Day of Resurrection.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 609)

4. Sins Are Forgiven for the Mu’adhdhin

“الْمُؤَذِّنُ يُغْفَرُ لَهُ مَدَّ صَوْتِهِ وَيَصْدُقُهُ كُلُّ رَطْبٍ وَيَابِسٍ، وَلَهُ مِثْلُ أَجْرِ مَنْ صَلَّى مَعَهُ”
“The Mu’adhdhin will be forgiven as far as his voice reaches, and everything that hears him—wet or dry—will bear witness…”
(Sunan an-Nasa’i 653 – Hasan chain)

5. Adhaan Is a Means of Entering Paradise

“يَعْجَبُ رَبُّكُمْ مِنْ رَاعِي غَنَمٍ فِي رَأْسِ شَظِيَّةٍ بِالْجَبَلِ، يُؤَذِّنُ بِالصَّلَاةِ، وَيُصَلِّي، فَيَقُولُ اللَّهُ: انْظُرُوا إِلَى عَبْدِي هَذَا يُؤَذِّنُ وَيُقِيمُ لِلصَّلَاةِ، يَخَافُ مِنِّي، قَدْ غَفَرْتُ لِعَبْدِي، وَأَدْخَلْتُهُ الْجَنَّةَ”
“Allah is amazed by a shepherd… I have forgiven him and admitted him into Paradise.”
(Sunan Abu Dawood 1203 – Sahih chain)

6. The Reward of Adhaan Is Beyond Measure

“لَوْ يَعْلَمُ النَّاسُ مَا فِي النِّدَاءِ وَالصَّفِّ الْأَوَّلِ، ثُمَّ لَمْ يَجِدُوا إِلَّا أَنْ يَسْتَهِمُوا عَلَيْهِ لَاسْتَهَمُوا”
“If people knew the reward for giving the Adhaan and standing in the first row, they would draw lots for it.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 615)

7. The Words of the Mu’adhdhin Are a Ticket to Jannah

“مَنْ قَالَ حِينَ يَسْمَعُ الْمُؤَذِّنَ مِثْلَ مَا يَقُولُ، ثُمَّ صَلَّى عَلَيَّ، فَإِنَّهُ يَسْتَحِقُّ شَفَاعَتِي”
“Whoever says the same as the Mu’adhdhin with certainty will enter Paradise.”
(Sunan an-Nasa’i 675 – Hasan chain)

8. Mu’adhdhins Will Stand Out on the Day of Judgment

“الْمُؤَذِّنُونَ أَطْوَلُ النَّاسِ أَعْنَاقًا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ”
“The Mu’adhdhins will have the longest necks on the Day of Judgment.”
(Sahih Muslim 387)

9. Du‘a Is Accepted at the Time of Adhaan

“ثِنْتَانِ لَا تُرَدَّانِ، أَوْ قَلَّمَا تُرَدَّانِ: الدُّعَاءُ عِنْدَ النِّدَاءِ، وَعِنْدَ الْبَأْسِ حِينَ يُلْحِمُ بَعْضُهُمْ بَعْضًا”
“Two supplications are never rejected: one at the time of the call to prayer and the other at the time of fighting in battle.”
(Sunan Abu Dawood 2540 – Hasan chain)

And:

“الدُّعَاءُ لَا يُرَدُّ بَيْنَ الْأَذَانِ وَالْإِقَامَةِ”
“Supplication made between the Adhaan and the Iqaamah is never rejected.”
(Sunan Abu Dawood 521 – Sahih chain)

And:

“قُولُوا كَمَا يَقُولُ الْمُؤَذِّنُ، فَإِذَا انْتَهَيْتُمْ فَسَلُوا تُعْطَوْا”
“Say as the Mu’adhdhin says, and when you finish, ask Allah—He will grant it to you.”
(Sunan Abu Dawood 524 – Hasan chain)

Final Reflection-Virtue of Adhan

The Adhaan is a daily reminder of our purpose and connection with Allah. It announces prayer, but more than that—it brings blessings, expels Shaytaan, gathers testimony for us, and grants forgiveness and Paradise.

If you’re not a muadhdhin, at least respond to adhan, make Du‘a, and teach your children to love this noble act. And if you ever have the opportunity to give Adhaan—seize it. You’re not just calling others to prayer; you’re calling yourself to Jannah.
