Hadith on Isra and Meraj, the night journey of the Prophet(Pbuh)

Shabe Meraj and Shabe barat are different

Shabe Meraj is a story of how prophet Muhammad sallalahu alaihe wa sallam’s heart was purified by the archangel Gabriel Alaihe Salam, who filled him with knowledge and faith and prepared him to enter the seven levels of heaven. The story of Shabe meraj is a true incident and is also called al-’Isrā’ wal-Mi‘rāj. This should not be confused with Shabe barat- 15th night of shaban known as Laila-tul-nisfe-min-Sha’ban or also Laila-tul-Bara’ah.

Shabe meraj occured in 27th of Rajab in the year 721 (Sad year – ‘aam ul-huzn) when Abu Talib and Khadijah (RA) died. The Isra part of the journey is Prophet Muhammad sallalahu alaihe wa sallam’s journey to “the farthest mosque” where he lead other prophets in prayer. And Mi’raj is the journey when he ascended to heaven and spoke to Allah (swt).

Some People doubt If the journey really did happen. Indeed Isra wal Meraj was one of the miracle of our dear prophet and it is evident from Quran and hadith.

Hadith on Isra and Meraj, the night journey of the Prophet(Pbuh) 14

Anas (May Allah be pleased with him) reported in the course of his famous Hadith pertaining to Al-Isra’ (the Ascension) that Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “Then Jibril (Gabriel) ascended along with me to the nearest heaven and requested for the gate to be opened. He was asked:

`Who is there?’ He replied: `Jibril.’ He was asked: `Who is with you?’ He said: `Muhammad.’ Then he ascended to the second heaven and requested for the opening of the gate. He was asked: `Who is there?’ He said: `Jibril.’ He was asked: `Who is with you?’ He replied: `Muhammad.’ In the same way he ascended to the third, fourth and all the heavens (i.e., until the seventh). At all of the gates he was asked: `Who is there?’ He replied: Jibril.”’

Edidence from Quran

Narrated Ibn `Abbas: Regarding: ‘And We granted the vision (Ascension to the Heaven “Miraj”) which We showed you (O Muhammad as an actual eye witness) but as a trial for mankind.’ (17.60) It was an actual eyewitness which was shown to Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) during the night he was taken on a journey (through the heavens). And the cursed tree is the tree of Az-Zaqqum (a bitter pungent tree which grows at the bottom of Hell).

Two drinking vessels in the night of Al Isra

Hadith on Isra and Meraj, the night journey of the Prophet

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

On the Night of Al-Isra (the Night of Ascension) the Prophet (ﷺ) was presented with two drinking vessels: one full of wine and the other one full of milk. He looked at them. Then he took the vessel which was full of milk. Thereupon Jibril (Gabriel) said: “Al-hamdu lillah (praise be to Allah) Who has guided you to that, which is in accord with Fitrah (i.e., Islamic Monotheism; pure nature of Islam). Had you selected wine, your people would have gone astray.”

[Muslim].
