Dua on Death — Islamic Supplications for the Deceased & For a Good Ending

Death is not the end for a believer — it is the beginning of the real life, the meeting with Allah, the moment our soul returns to the One Who created it with love and wisdom.

Yet, when we lose someone, hearts ache, tears come, voices tremble. This pain is natural — even Rasūlullāh ﷺ wept when his beloved son Ibrāhīm passed away.

He ﷺ said:

“The eyes shed tears and the heart grieves, but we do not say except what pleases our Lord.”

In grief, we turn to dua — because dua is healing, dua is mercy, dua is hope.
Through dua, we honour the one who returned to Allah, and we find strength to continue the journey they have completed.

During moments of loss or hardship, a believer turns to the words taught by Allah Himself: “Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un” — Verily we belong to Allah and to Him we return. This powerful Quranic dua is not only recited at the time of death, but also upon any trial or pain, reminding the heart that nothing slips outside Allah’s wisdom and that every return, every separation, and every tear holds meaning in His divine plan. Saying this dua brings peace, patience, reward, and closeness to Allah, and it transforms grief into hope by anchoring our hearts in the reality of the Hereafter.

Dua for the Deceased (General)

Arabic

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ وَارْحَمْهُ وَعَافِهِ وَاعْفُ عَنْهُ

Transliteration

allahumma ighfir lahu, warḥamhu, wa ‘āfihi, wa‘fu ‘anhu

Meaning

“O Allah, forgive him, have mercy on him, grant him peace and safety, and pardon him.”
(Sahih Muslim)

(Change له to لها for a female.)

Dua When Visiting the Grave

Arabic

السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ أَهْلَ الدِّيَارِ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُسْلِمِينَ، وَإِنَّا إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ بِكُمْ لَاحِقُونَ

Transliteration

Assalāmu ʿalaykum ahla ad-diyāri mina-l-mu’minīna wa-l-muslimīn, wa innā inshā’Allāh bikum lāḥiqūn.

Meaning

“Peace be upon you, O inhabitants of the graves from among the believers and Muslims. Indeed, we will, if Allah wills, join you soon.”
(Sahih Muslim)

Dua for Parents Who Passed Away

Arabic

رَّبِّ ارْحَمْهُمَا كَمَا رَبَّيَانِي صَغِيرًا

Transliteration

Rabbir-ḥamhumā kamā rabbayānī ṣaghīrā.

Meaning

“My Lord, have mercy on them as they raised me when I was small.”
(Qur’an 17:24)

Dua for Someone Who Died Recently

Arabic

اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْ قَبْرَهُ رَوْضَةً مِنْ رِيَاضِ الجَنَّةِ، وَلَا تَجْعَلْهُ حُفْرَةً مِنْ حُفَرِ النَّارِ

Transliteration

Allahumma-j‘al qabarahu rawḍatan min riyāḍil-jannah, wa lā taj‘alhu ḥufratan min ḥufarin-nār.

Meaning

“O Allah, make his grave a garden from the gardens of Paradise and do not make it a pit from the pits of hell.”

Dua for a Good Ending (Husnul Khātimah)

Arabic

اللَّهُمَّ اخْتِمْ لَنَا بِالْخَيْرِ وَلَا تَخْتِمْ لَنَا بِالشَّرِّ

Transliteration

Allahumma-khtim lanā bil-khayr wa lā takhtim lanā bish-sharr.

Meaning

“O Allah, grant us a good ending and do not let our end be in evil.”

And another beautiful dua:

Arabic

اللَّهُمَّ ثَبِّتْنِي عِنْدَ المَوْتِ بِلا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللهُ

Meaning

“O Allah, keep me firm at the time of death upon ‘La ilaha illa Allah.’”

Reflection: What Death Teaches the Believer

Death softens the heart.
It reminds us:

• This world is a journey, not a destination
• Allah’s mercy is wider than our grief
• Those who leave us aren’t lost — they have reached before us
• We will meet again — in a place where there is no pain

A believer mourns, but never loses hope.
Because Allah promised:

“Surely, to Allah we belong, and to Him we return.”
(Qur’an 2:156)

And He also promised:

“In the remembrance of Allah, hearts find peace.”
(Qur’an 13:28)

Acts of Sadaqah for the Deceased

If your heart aches for someone who passed away, continue their rewards:

• Give charity on their behalf
• Recite Qur’an
• Make dua often
• Help the poor
• Teach others a good deed they loved

Their life in the grave becomes illuminated by your love and dua.

Conclusion

Death separates bodies, not hearts.
The love stays, the dua continues, and Allah gathers hearts again in Jannah.

May Allah forgive our loved ones, widen their graves, fill them with noor, and grant us all a beautiful reunion under His shade.
