Seven Names of Hell in the Qur’an:
- Jahannam (جهنم) – Hell
- Jaḥīm (الجحيم) – The Blazing Fire

- Saqar (سقر) – The Scorching Fire
- Laẓā (لظى) – The Blaze

1. Jahannam (جهنم)
- The most common name for Hell in the Qur’an.
- Reference:
- “Indeed, Jahannam has been lying in wait.” (Surah An-Naba 78:21)
2. Jaḥīm (الجحيم) – The Blazing Fire
- Refers to the intense heat and blazing flames.
- Reference:
- “And they will [enter to] burn in al-Jaḥīm.” (Surah As-Saffat 37:55)
3. Saʿīr (السعير) – The Burning Fire
- A fire that is kindled and blazing.
- Reference:
- “And they will burn in a Saʿīr.” (Surah Al-Mulk 67:5)
4. Saqar (سقر) – The Scorching Fire
- A name for Hell meaning “to scorch” and destroy.
- Reference:
- “I will drive him into Saqar. And what can make you know what Saqar is? It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned].” (Surah Al-Muddaththir 74:26-28)
5. Laẓā (لظى) – The Blaze
- A blazing flame that strips away everything.
- Reference:
- “No! Indeed, it is a Flame (Laẓā), A remover of exteriors.” (Surah Al-Maʿārij 70:15-16)
6. Ḥuṭamah (الحطمة) – The Crusher / Breaker
- From the root “to crush,” meaning it crushes and breaks everything thrown into it.
- Reference:
- “And what can make you know what al-Ḥuṭamah is? It is the fire of Allah, [eternally] fueled.” (Surah Al-Humazah 104:5-6)
7. Hāwiyah (هاوية) – The Pit / Abyss
- A deep abyss into which the sinner falls.
- Reference:
- “But as for he whose scales are light, his refuge will be an abyss (Hāwiyah). And what can make you know what that is? It is a Fire, intensely hot.” (Surah Al-Qariʿah 101:8-11)
