The best Dua for the deceased
Many supplications have been reported from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for the deceased. Among these supplications are:
O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, pardon him and grant him well-being, honor his reception, expand his entrance, wash him with water, snow, and hail, purify him from sins as a white garment is purified from filth, replace for him a home better than his home, a family better than his family, a spouse better than his spouse, and protect him from the trial of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.

O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those present among us and those absent, our young and our old, our males and our females. O Allah, whoever You give life among us, give him life upon Islam, and whoever You cause to die among us, cause him to die upon faith. O Allah, do not deprive us of his reward and do not lead us astray after him.
Seek forgiveness for your brother and ask that he be made firm, for he is now being questioned.
O Allah, indeed so-and-so the son of so-and-so is under Your protection and the rope of Your safeguard, so protect him from the trial of the grave and the punishment of the Fire. You are the One who fulfills promises and upholds truth, so forgive him and have mercy on him; indeed, You are the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful.
O Allah, You are her Lord, You created her, You guided her to Islam, You took her soul, and You know her secrets and what she made public. We have come as intercessors, so forgive her.
Supplications for the Deceased
Indeed, the believer grieves over the separation from loved ones and longs for the one he has lost. The best thing a believer can offer the deceased is to supplicate for him, as our beloved Muhammad ﷺ instructed us, and to give charity on his behalf. What follows are supplications for the deceased seeking mercy, forgiveness, and goodness:
O Allah, replace for him a home better than his home, a family better than his family, admit him into Paradise, and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.
O Allah, deal with him according to what You are worthy of, and do not deal with him according to what he deserves.
O Allah, reward him for good with good, and for wrongdoing with pardon and forgiveness.
O Allah, if he was a doer of good, increase him in good deeds, and if he was a doer of evil, overlook his evil deeds.
O Allah, admit him into Paradise without reckoning or prior punishment.
O Allah, grant him companionship in his loneliness, comfort in his desolation, and ease in his estrangement.
O Allah, grant him a blessed dwelling, and You are the best of those who grant dwellings.
O Allah, place him among the dwellings of the truthful, the martyrs, and the righteous—and excellent are those as companions.
O Allah, make his grave a garden from the gardens of Paradise, and do not make it a pit from the pits of the Fire.
O Allah, expand his grave as far as his sight reaches, and furnish his grave with furnishings from Paradise.
O Allah, protect him from the punishment of the grave and from the earth constricting upon his sides.
O Allah, fill his grave with contentment, light, spaciousness, and joy.
O Allah, indeed he is under Your protection and the rope of Your safeguard, so protect him from the trial of the grave and the punishment of the Fire. You are the One who fulfills promises and upholds truth, so forgive him and have mercy upon him; indeed, You are the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful.
O Allah, indeed he is Your servant, the son of Your servant; he departed from the world, its expanse, its beloved things, and those he loved therein, to the darkness of the grave and what he will encounter.
O Allah, he used to testify that there is no deity except You, and that Muhammad is Your servant and Messenger—and You know him best.
O Allah, we seek nearness to You by You, and we beseech You by You that You have mercy upon him and do not punish him, and that You make him firm during questioning.
O Allah, he has come down upon You, and You are the best One upon whom to descend. He has become in need of Your mercy, and You are free of any need to punish him.
O Allah, grant him Your mercy and Your pleasure, protect him from the trial of the grave and its punishment, and grant him by Your mercy safety from Your punishment until You resurrect him to Your Paradise, O Most Merciful of the merciful.
O Allah, transfer him from the dwellings of worms and the narrowness of graves to the gardens of eternal abode.
O Allah, protect him beneath the earth, conceal him on the Day of Presentation, and do not disgrace him on the Day they are resurrected—“the Day when neither wealth nor children will benefit, except one who comes to Allah with a sound heart.”
O Allah, place his record in his right hand, make his reckoning easy, weigh his scale heavily with good deeds, make his feet firm upon the Bridge, and settle him in the highest levels of Paradise, near Your beloved and chosen one, Muhammad ﷺ.
O Allah, grant him safety from the terror of the Day of Resurrection and the horrors of the Day of Resurrection, make his soul secure and tranquil, and inspire him with his proof.
O Allah, make him tranquil in the belly of the grave, secure at the standing of witnesses, confident in the abundance of Your pleasure, and foremost toward Your highest degrees.
O Allah, place light at his right side until You resurrect him secure and tranquil in a light from Your light.
O Allah, look upon him with a look of pleasure, for whomever You look upon with a look of pleasure, You will never punish.
O Allah, lodge him in the vast gardens, forgive him, O Most Merciful, have mercy upon him, O Most Compassionate, and overlook what You know, O All-Knowing.
O Allah, pardon him, for You have said: “And He pardons much.”
O Allah, indeed he has come to Your door and laid himself at Your threshold, so bestow upon him Your pardon, Your honor, and the generosity of Your kindness.
O Allah, Your mercy encompasses all things, so have mercy upon him with a mercy that brings tranquility to his soul and coolness to his eyes.
O Allah, gather him among the righteous, led as a delegation to the Most Merciful.
O Allah, gather him among the people of the right hand, and make his greeting, “Peace be upon you from the companions of the right hand.”
O Allah, give him glad tidings of Your saying: “Eat and drink with pleasure for what you sent ahead in the days past.”
O Allah, make him among those who are joyful in Paradise, abiding therein as long as the heavens and the earth endure.
O Allah, we do not declare him pure before You, but we think that he believed and did righteous deeds, so grant him two gardens with spreading branches, in accordance with Your saying: “And for the one who feared standing before his Lord are two gardens.”
O Allah, allow our Prophet and chosen one to intercede for him, gather him under his banner, and give him to drink from his noble hand a pleasant drink after which he will never thirst.
O Allah, he was patient upon affliction and did not despair, so grant him the rank of the patient—those who are given their reward without measure, for You have said: “Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without account.”
O Allah, he used to pray to You, so make him firm upon the Bridge on the Day when feet will slip.
O Allah, he used to fast for You, so admit him into Paradise through the Gate of Rayyān.
O Allah, he used to recite and listen to Your Book, so allow the Qur’an to intercede for him, have mercy upon him from the Fire, and raise him, O Most Merciful, in Paradise to the last verse he recited or heard, and the last letter he recited.
O Allah, grant him for every letter of the Qur’an sweetness, for every word honor, for every verse happiness, for every chapter safety, and for every part a reward.
O Allah, have mercy upon him for he was a Muslim, forgive him for he was a believer, admit him into Paradise for he believed in Your Prophet, and pardon him for he used to recite Your Book.
O Allah, have mercy upon us when certainty comes to us, sweat pours from our brows, and moaning and longing increase.
O Allah, have mercy upon us when the physician despairs of us, the beloved weeps over us, the near and the far abandon us, and sobbing and wailing rise.
O Allah, have mercy upon us when hardships intensify, regrets multiply, terrors surround us, tears overflow, private parts are exposed, and strength and ability fail.
O Allah, have mercy upon us when we are carried upon shoulders, when throats reach the collarbones, and it is said, “Who can cure him?”, and it is thought that it is the separation, and the leg is wound around the leg—to You, our Lord, on that Day is the driving.
O Allah, have mercy upon us when we are buried beneath the soil, when graves and doors are sealed, and family and loved ones depart.
O Allah, have mercy upon us when comfort departs, breeze ceases, and it is said, “What deceived you concerning your generous Lord?”
O Allah, allow our Prophet and chosen one to intercede for him, gather him under his banner, and give him to drink from his noble hand a pleasant drink after which he will never thirst.
O Allah, have mercy upon us when we stand for questioning, speech betrays us, and neither status, wealth, nor children benefit us—nothing remains except the favor of the Most High, the Most Great.
O Allah, indeed he is Your servant, the son of Your servant, the son of Your maidservant; he died bearing witness to Your Oneness and to the messengership of Your Messenger, so forgive him—for You are the Oft-Forgiving.
O Allah, do not deprive us of his reward, do not test us after him, forgive us and him, and gather us with him in the Gardens of Bliss, O Lord of the worlds.
O Allah, send down patience and consolation upon his family, and make them content with Your decree.
O Allah, make them firm upon the firm word in this worldly life and in the Hereafter, and on the Day when witnesses will stand.
O Allah, make him a forerunner and a ذخْر (treasured provision) for his parents, an answered intercessor. O Allah, weigh heavily by him their scales, magnify through him their rewards, join him with the righteous believers, place him under the care of Ibrāhīm, protect him by Your mercy from the punishment of Hellfire, replace for him a home better than his home and a family better than his family.
O Allah, forgive our predecessors, our children who passed before us, and those who preceded us in faith.
O Allah, expand her grave as far as her sight reaches, and furnish her grave with furnishings from Paradise.
O Allah, send prayers, peace, and blessings upon our master Muhammad, and upon his family and companions, until the Day of Judgment.
The Virtue of Supplicating for the Deceased
The deceased benefit from the supplication of Muslims for them.
When a human being dies, his deeds come to an end except for three: ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who supplicates for him.
Allah the Exalted says:
And those who came after them say: “Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith.”
Supplication benefits the deceased by the consensus of Muslims. Charity on behalf of the deceased is legislated, and performing ‘umrah, ḥajj, and giving charity on his behalf are legislated, from which the deceased benefits by the permission of Allah the Exalted.
Deeds That Reach the Deceased
The best thing a Muslim can offer the deceased is to perform deeds that reach him, increase his good deeds, weigh down his scale, and raise his ranks. Among the deeds that reach the deceased are:
Supplication and Seeking Forgiveness
Indeed, Allah raises the rank of the righteous servant in Paradise. He will say, “My Lord, how did this come to me?” It will be said, “Through your child’s seeking forgiveness for you.”
Charity
Sa‘d ibn ‘Ubādah’s mother died while he was away from her. He said, “O Messenger of Allah, my mother died while I was absent. Will anything benefit her if I give charity on her behalf?” He said, “Yes.” He said, “Then I make you witness that my orchard al-Mikhrāf is charity on her behalf.”
A man said to the Prophet ﷺ, “My father died and left wealth without making a will. Will it expiate for him if I give charity on his behalf?” He said, “Yes.”
His mother died, so he said, “O Messenger of Allah, my mother has died. Should I give charity on her behalf?” He said, “Yes.” He said, “Which charity is best?” He said, “Providing water.”
Ḥajj and ‘Umrah
A woman came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, “O Messenger of Allah, I gave charity to my mother, then she died and the charity returned to me.” He said, “Your reward has become binding, and your charity has returned to you.” She said, “O Messenger of Allah, my mother died without performing ḥajj. Should I perform ḥajj on her behalf?” He said, “Yes, perform ḥajj on her behalf.” She said, “My mother died owing a month of fasting. Should I fast on her behalf?” He said, “Yes, fast on her behalf.”
Fulfilling Vows and Debts
A woman came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, “My mother vowed to perform ḥajj, but she died before performing it. Should I perform ḥajj on her behalf?” He said, “Yes, perform ḥajj on her behalf. Tell me, if your mother had a debt, would you pay it?” She said, “Yes.” He said, “Then fulfill the right of Allah, for Allah is more deserving of fulfillment.”
