Day 28 – Reflecting on Allah’s Names: Al-‘Afuww, Ar-Ra’uf, Malik-ul-Mulk

As we draw closer to the end of this journey, reflecting on Allah’s names, our hearts feel a mix of emotions—gratitude for His mercy, awe of His power, and hope in His forgiveness. No matter how far we may have wandered, how many mistakes we have made, or how uncertain our hearts have felt, Allah’s love, mercy, and sovereignty remain constant.

Today, we reflect on three beautiful names that remind us of Allah’s complete forgiveness, deep compassion, and absolute authority over everything.

• Al-‘Afuww (ٱلْعَفُوُ) – The Pardoner, The One Who Erases Sins
• Ar-Ra’uf (ٱلرَّؤُوفُ) – The Most Compassionate, The One Who is Extremely Kind
• Malik-ul-Mulk (مَالِكُ ٱلْمُلْكِ) – The Owner of Sovereignty, The Absolute Ruler

These names fill our hearts with comfort and reassurance—our mistakes can be erased, we are never alone in our struggles, and everything in existence is under Allah’s perfect rule.

Al-‘Afuww (ٱلْعَفُوُ) – The Pardoner, The One Who Erases Sins

The name Al-‘Afuww comes from the root “‘a-f-w” (ع ف و), which means to pardon, erase, and remove all traces of something. Allah is Al-‘Afuww—He does not just forgive sins; He completely erases them, as if they never happened.

“Indeed, Allah is ever Pardoning and Forgiving.”
(Surah An-Nisa 4:43)

Unlike simple forgiveness, which still acknowledges the sin, pardon (Afw) means complete removal—as if it never existed. Imagine the weight of our past mistakes being lifted, the shame and regret washed away, and our record before Allah becoming pure once again. That is the mercy of Al-‘Afuww.

This name is especially powerful as we approach the last ten nights of Ramadan, when the Prophet ﷺ taught us to say:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي

allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibbul-‘afwa, fa’fu ‘anni.
“O Allah, You are Pardoning, and You love to pardon, so pardon me.”
(Tirmidhi)

Reflection:

• Are there sins we are carrying that we need to sincerely seek pardon for?
• How can we reflect this name by pardoning those who have wronged us?

Ar-Ra’uf (ٱلرَّؤُوفُ) – The Most Compassionate, The One Who is Extremely Kind

The name Ar-Ra’uf comes from the root “r-a’-f” (ر أ ف), which means intense mercy, tenderness, and deep kindness. Allah is Ar-Ra’uf—His compassion goes beyond what we can imagine.

“Indeed, Allah is to the people Kind and Merciful.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:143)

There are times when we feel overwhelmed, lost, or broken. In those moments, Allah’s kindness gently surrounds us, guiding us, comforting us, and bringing us ease. His mercy is so vast that even the smallest struggles we go through do not go unnoticed.

Have you ever felt relief from a hardship in an unexpected way? Or found peace in your heart after a difficult moment? That is Ar-Ra’uf at work—His kindness reaches us when we least expect it, in ways we do not even realize.

Reflection:

• How has Allah’s kindness been present in our lives in ways we didn’t expect?
• How can we show more gentleness and kindness to others, just as Allah shows to us?

Malik-ul-Mulk (مَالِكُ ٱلْمُلْكِ) – The Owner of Sovereignty, The Absolute Ruler

The name Malik-ul-Mulk comes from the root “m-l-k” (م ل ك), which means ownership, authority, and power. Allah is the true and absolute King—everything belongs to Him, and nothing happens without His permission.

“Say, ‘O Allah! Owner of Sovereignty, You give sovereignty to whom You will, and You take sovereignty away from whom You will.’”
(Surah Aal-e-Imran 3:26)

We live in a world where power shifts, leaders rise and fall, and wealth and status are temporary. But Allah remains the ultimate King—no ruler, no wealth, and no authority exist except by His command.

This name should fill us with humility—our success, our possessions, and even our own lives do not belong to us, but to Allah. It should also fill us with hope—no oppression or injustice will last forever, because Allah, the true King, will restore justice in due time.

Reflection:

• Do we recognize that everything we have is from Allah and belongs to Him?
• How can we submit more to His rule, trusting that He controls all things for our ultimate good?

Final Thoughts

These names remind us of Allah’s limitless mercy, compassion, and absolute power:

• Al-‘Afuww reassures us that our sins can be erased completely if we sincerely turn to Him.
• Ar-Ra’uf reminds us that Allah’s kindness is present in every moment of our lives, even in our hardships.
• Malik-ul-Mulk teaches us that true power and control belong only to Allah—nothing happens without His wisdom.

Ya Allah, You are Al-‘Afuww—erase our sins and purify our hearts. You are Ar-Ra’uf—fill our lives with Your kindness and ease. You are Malik-ul-Mulk—help us trust in Your plan and submit fully to Your will.
