Dua for a Traveller: Authentic Supplications Before, During and After a Journey

Remembrance of Allah is one of the greatest protections a believer carries through life. It protects the heart before it protects the body, and brings calm before it removes danger. This becomes even more important during travel — a time of fatigue, uncertainty, and separation from the comforts of home.

My non-Tech Mom loves this Digital Tasbih because her counts are never lost. Alhumdulillah, Now she spends close to Four hours in dhikr everyday. Would you like to build your dhikr habit too? It’s completely free.

The Prophet ﷺ described travel as a form of hardship:

“Travel is a portion of suffering; it prevents one of you from his food, drink and sleep. When he completes his purpose, let him hasten back to his family.”

Because of this difficulty, Islam teaches a Muslim to begin every journey with dhikr and duʿā — transforming travel into worship and placing one’s safety in the care of Allah.

Below is a complete collection of authentic and recommended supplications for travelling.

The Dua When Beginning the Journey

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

When returning he would add:

Translation

Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest.
Glory be to the One who has subjected this for us though we could never have controlled it, and surely to our Lord we will return.

O Allah, we ask You in this journey for righteousness, piety, and deeds that please You.
O Allah, make this journey easy for us and shorten its distance.
O Allah, You are the Companion in travel and the Guardian over the family.
O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardship of travel, the distressing sight, and a bad return regarding wealth and family.

Upon return:
We return, repent, worship, and praise our Lord.
