Is Hell a Black Hole?
Hell is a matter of the Unseen. We only know about Hell from what Allah informs us by the way of revelation to His prophets (peace be upon them). It’s location is a mystery to us.
But Quran also asks us to ponder over its verses.Once when I was listening to the lectures of” late Mir Aneesuddin”,I caught few lines of his speech where he advised the youth to research on the matter of black holes. He had a personal opinion that hell could be a form of black hole.Scientist acknowledge black holes but deny hell.why?
Morever, some people always complain that whenever there is a discovery the Muslims always come forward saying “This was stated in our Quran”.Today Hell is not discovered and neither is the mystery of black holes solved.I know this article can become controversial but keeping aside controversy,if you really look at following evidences this will spin your mind. Here are few striking similarity between Hell and Black Hole.
Black Holes are formed when giant stars eventually blast part or collapse on themselves. Black Holes and Hell have many common features as mentioned in the Holy Qur’an. Here are some of them:
First: Both have the same name:
The Holy Qur’an refers to the word ‘Hell’ as a Black Hole
(Narul Hamea: which means black hole)
(And you were on the edge of a hole from the fire, so He rescued you from it):Surat Al-Imran (103):
Hell is black in color as described by prophet Mohammed (PBUH) in the Holy Hadith:
- (Abu Huraira narrates: Rasulullah (PBUH) said: “Hell had been lit for one thousand years until its flames became red. Again it was heated for another thousand years till its colour became white. Still again it was burnt for further thousand years and its white color flames turned pitch black.” (Tirmidhi, Muwatta)
- In another Hadith, prophet Mohammed (PBUH) said: “Hellfire is black as tar and dark as night.” (Bayhaqi)
Second: Both have gravitational force
Physicists say that Black Holes have such a strong gravitational force that even light cannot escape from their grasp if it comes near enough. This fact is indicated in Surat Al Mulk
(When they are thrown into it, they hear from it a dreadful inhalation while it boils up)(67:7)
The word inhalation denotes the gravitational force”.
Moreover, Hell has such a strong gravitational force that can attract the sun, as referred to in
Surah At-Takwir : (When the sun is wrapped up)(81:1)
Abu Maryam narrated from his father that the Messenger of Allah, (PBUH) said: (When the sun is wrapped up) means wrapped up in Hell.)
Third: Both can dilate the time:
Physicists say that Black Holes warp time i.e. cause Time Distortion, where the time slows down near any massive body. This means that one hour near a Black Hole may equal thousands of years on Earth.
The time in Hell is also warped and one day there equals 50,000 years on earth as mentioned in Surat Al Ma’arij
(The angels and the spirit ascend unto him in a Period the measure whereof is (as) fifty thousand years.)(70:4)
The word ‘Day’ here means the Day of Resurrection. Hell also distorts time as stated in Surat Al Insan
(We only fear a Day of distressful Wrath from the side of our Lord)(76:10)
The word ‘distressful wrath’ literally means distortion and here it describes the word Day as a time unit.
Fourth: Both can wrap gases:
Physicists say that if a star falls within the gravitational field of a Black Hole, that Black Hole wraps around that star with its gases spiraling towards the Black Hole until it is devoured altogether.
Hell, as well, wraps the sun (as a star) around in a spiral manner. This is clearly stated in Surah At-Takwir:
(When the sun is wrapped up)(81:1)
Takwir means the Intense Wrapping Around; just as a Bedouin wraps a turban around his head in folds. It is the Hell which wraps up the sun around it as stated in the Holy Hadith mentioned above.
Fifth: Both can stretch and enlarge bodies:
Physicists say if a person falls in the grip of a Black Hole, the gravitational force of that Black Hole will stretch his/her body to a tremendous length i.e. its gravity would stretch the body like spaghetti.
This is exactly what happens to criminals in Hell as indicated in Surat Al Araf
(Indeed, those who deny Our verses and are arrogant toward them – the gates of Heaven will not be opened for them, nor will they enter Paradise until a camel enters into the eye of a needle. And thus do We recompense the criminals)(7:40)
In order for the camel to enter into the eye of a needle, it must be stretched to be slender enough to go through it. The real suffering and torture actually lies in the process of stretching.
Just as Black Holes enlarge bodies, so does Hell to unbelievers. This is confirmed by the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) in a Holy Hadith: (The molar tooth of an unbeliever in Hell will be like mountain Uhud in size, the distance of his two shoulders in Hell will be a three-day journey for a swift rider, his seat in Hell will equal the distance between Qadid and Madina, and the thickness of his skin in Hell will be forty-two cubits the size of a giant’s arm).

Sixth: Both are never full
Physicists say that even if objects multiply in a Black Hole, its surface area will not diminish.
Likewise, Hell is never full as stated in Surat Qaf :
(On the Day We will say to Hell, “Have you been filled?” and it will say, “Are there some more”). However, the Great Creator does say He will fill it on the Day of Judgment and we have no objection to His ruling.(50:30)
Seventh: Both exist in the Heaven:
Both Black Holes and Hell exist in the heaven as mentioned in Surat Adh-Dhariyat:
(In the Heaven is your provision and that which you are promised) (51:22)
What we are promised is Heaven and Hell, which both prophet Mohammed saw in his ascension to heaven.
How can we differentiate Hell from Black Holes?
All black holes are not Hell.Physicists say that there are millions of Black Holes, but how can we differentiate Hell from those Black Holes?
The Holy Quran has clearly stated the distinctive features of Hell in Surat Al Mursalat:
- Move on towards the shadow of that smoke which has three branches. (30)
- Neither providing shade nor protecting from the flame. (31)
- Undoubtedly, the hell shoot up sparks like palaces. (32)
- As if there were (a string of) thick yellow cords or palm trunks (marching swiftly)(33)
Allah knows best.
