The Abadilah Al-Arba’ah – The four Abdullahs who were great Faqih.

The ‘Abadilah Al-Arba’ah – The four Abdullahs :

The most famous Abdullah in Islamic history were the fuqaha sahaba who were great muhaddith and mufassir and have narrated many many hadiths of Rasul Allah Sallalahu alaihe wa sallam.

  1. Abdullah bin Abbas, (radi allahu anhu)
  2. Abdullah bin Umar, (radi allahu anhu)
  3. Abdullah bin Amr bin Al-As (radi allahu anhu)
  4. and Abdullah bin Az-Zubair. (radi allahu anhu)

Abdullah ibn Masud (ra) is not counted- as he is much senior badri sahabi while the above 4 abdullah are of same age.

Abdullah bin Abbas: عبد الله بن العباس بن عبد المطلب

Full name: ‘Abdullah ibn al-‘Abbas bin ‘Abd al-Muttalib b. Hashim b. ‘Abd Manaf b. Qusayy b. Kilab b. Murrah

Date of Birth: 3 BH/619 CE (Makkah)

Date of death: 68 AH/687 CE (Ta’if)[ Natural ]

Aside from being the Prophet’s own cousin, Abdullah bin Abbas was always around to assist the Prophet by preparing water for him to make wudhu (ablution) and to accompany him in his journeys. Wherever the Prophet s.a.w went, Abdullah bin Abbas was there with him. 

Prophet Sallalahu alaihe wa sallam made dua for him:


اللَّهُمَّ فَقِّهْهُ فِي الدِّينِ وَعَلِّمْهُ التَّأْوِيلَ

“O Allah grant him (Abdullah Ibn Abbas) understanding in the religion and teach him proper interpretation (of the Quran)”

Abdullah bin Umar عبد الله بن عمر بن الخطاب

Full name: ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar bin Al-Khattab b. Nufayl b. ‘Abdul-‘Uzza b. Riyah b. ‘Abdullah b. Qurt b. Razah

Sahabi

Date of birth– 10 BH/613 CE (Makkah)

Date of Death:74 AH/693 CE (Makkah) [Natural]

He was the son of the second Caliph ‘Umar ibn Khattab. He was a prominent authority in hadith and law, and was known for his piety, honesty and erudition in Prophetic traditions. He was too young to participate at Uhud, but participated at Khandaq and later battles.

Abdullah bin Umar was one of the distinguished narrators of the hadiths due to his strong attachment and love for the Prophet s.a.w.

He observed the Prophet s.a.w. closely, mirroring him in every action, praying where the Prophet s.a.w. prayed or supplicating as how the Prophet s.a.w. made his beautiful supplication. Ibn Umar recorded around 2630 hadiths.

Abdullah bin Amr bin Al-As عبد الله بن عمرو بن العاص

He was the son of Amr ibn al-As radi allahu anhu of Banu Sahm and was a companion of Rasul Allah sallalahu alaihe wa sallam.

He was one of the first companions to write down the Hadith

Abu Huraira said that Abd Allah ibn ‘Amr was more knowledgeable than he was

His work Al-Sahifah al-Sadiqah remained in his family and was used by his grandson ‘Amr ibn Shu’ayb. Ahmad ibn Hanbal incorporated the whole of the work of Abd Allah ibn ‘Amr in his voluminous book Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal thereby covering the missing Al-Sahifah al-Sadiqah which was written in the days of Rasul Allah.

Abdullah ibn Zubair- عبد الله ابن الزبير ابن العوام,

He was the son of al-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam and Asma bint Abi Bakr ra

Born- May 624 CE

Abdullah bin Az-Zubair was also blessed to be one of the helpers of the Prophet s.a.w, granting him the opportunity to carefully observe the Prophet s.a.w, acquire knowledge and perfectly emulate the Sunnah of the Prophet s.a.w.

He was also so close to Sayyidatina Aishah r.a. that she was known as ‘Umm Abdullah’ (the mother of Abdullah) due to his firm attachment to her. As he grew older, he became a well-respected man, whose qualities surpassed that of many others. It was reported that Uthman bin Talhah r.a said:

“Ibn Az-Zubair was without equal in three things: courage, worship and eloquence”.
