What is Sajda Tilawat ?

Wherever the word “sajdah” appears on the margin of the Qur’an, then on reciting that verse, sajdah becomes wajib. This sajdah is known as sajdah tilawat.

How many Sajdah in Quran?

There are fourteen verses of the Quran whose recital calls for a prostration. Most copies of the Quran mark fifteen verses as calling for prostrations.

Two of these fifteen are in Sura al-Hajj, and the Shafis hold both of these verses to call for a prostration. Abu Dawud and Hakim both relate that our master the CompanionAmr b. al-As (Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) taught him to prostrate at fifteen places in the Quran, two of them in Sura al-Hajj. al-Khatib al-Shirbini classes this hadith as well-authenticated (hasan) in his Mughni al-Muhtaj.

Why do Sajda when reading Ayah of Prostration in Quran?

Abu Huraira reported that the Prophet Muhammad SAW said:

When a person while reciting the Quran reaches the point of Sajdah in the surah and he does a sajdah then the Shaitaan cries and separates himself from that person and wails” O Disaster! When he was commanded to do Sajdah, he performed sajdah, thus for him, there are the gardens of Jannah. When I was commanded to do sajdah I did not do sajdah, and for me, there is the Fire.”(Sahih Muslim)

Meanings of verses of Sajda Tilawat/Ayah of Prostration in Quran. 13

The method of making sajdah tilawat is as follows: the person should say Allahu Akbar and go into sqjdah. When saying Allahu Akbar the hands should not be raised. While in sajdah, he should say:

islamic prayer
islamic prayer

Subhan e rabbil aala : Glory be to my Lord, the Exalted.

At least three times. Then, he should say Allahu Akbar and raise his head. The sajdah tilawat is complete.

It is preferable to stand up, say Allahu Akbar and go into sajdah, to say Allahu Akbar and stand up from the sajdah. It is also permissible to go into sajdah and come up from it while in the sitting position.

  • A person who is about to make the prostration of recitation is to pronounce the takb’ir (Allahu Akbar ), but is not to raise his hands.
  • No tashahhud is to be recited nor is there a salutation

Who should recite Sajda Tilawat?

  • According to Ahnaf, Sajdah tilawat becomes wajib on the person who recites a verse of sajdah and also on the person who hears it being recited, irrespective of whether the person had sat down to listen to the Qur’an, was preoccupied with some work, or heard it without intending to listen to it. It is therefore better to recite the verse of sajdah softly so that sajdah tilawat does not become wajib on anyone else.•
  • While sitting down. a person recited a verse of sajdah.. He then stood up but did not move from that place of sitting. i.e. he stood on the same spot where he had been sitting. He then repeated that same verse he will only have to make one sajdah tilawat.
  • He recited a verse of sajdah at one place, got up and went to do some work, came back and sat at that same spot and recited that same verse again. He will have to make two sajdahs.
  • While sitting in one place he recited a verse of sajdah. On completing the recitation of the verse, he remained sitting in that place and started doing some other work.
  • For example. he started eating, or a woman started sewing or feeding her child. Then he ( or she) recited that same verse of sajdah again. Two sajdahs will have to be made because when a person engages in any other task. it will be regarded as if the place has changed.
  • Each prostration that becomes wajib during salat, if it is not made during salat, is not to be made by way of qada’ outside prayer
  • If the persons praying hear it ( the occasion of sajdah) during prayer from a person who is not praying with them, they are not to make the prostration during prayer.

If one is not with wudu and listen to ayat e sajda then what to do?

It is better if you make wudhu and perform sajdah, otherwise it is mustahab to recite سمعنا واطعنا غفرانک ربنا والیک المصیر and perform sajdah later when feel easy:

في التتارخانیۃ: یستحب للتالي أو السامع إذا لم یمکنہ السجود أن یقول: سمعنا وأطعنا غفرانک ربنا وإلیک المصیر (الشامي 2:583)

Doing 15 Sajdah Tilaawahs as per Uthmani Mushaf- Is it allowed?

The Uthmani print was marked according to all four legal schools, without any specifications. It would have been better if the differences were outlined. A Hanafi should not perform the second sajdah of Surah Al-Hajj in salah, doing so necessitates sajda sahw.(Fatwa Mufti Majaul)
