Dua in Pregnancy and for Delivery
Childbirth is both an incredible joy and a moment of profound vulnerability. During my first pregnancy, I felt a mixture of excitement and anxiety—wondering about my baby’s well-being and bracing for the intensity of labor. One soothing practice that helped me significantly was turning to duas (supplications) from the Quran and Sunnah.
In this article, I’ll share some well-known duas and Quranic verses that Muslims often recite for ease and comfort during labor. Whether it’s your first child or you’re growing your family further, may these spiritual tools offer you strength and reassurance in this special time.
The Importance of Prayer During Pregnancy
Labor can bring about a rollercoaster of emotions. Reciting duas helps align your heart with Allah’s remembrance, providing a sense of calm amid the uncertainty. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) taught us that remembering Allah brings blessings, and what better moment to seek these blessings than during the arrival of a new life?
Moroever Praying during pregnancy isn’t just about seeking blessings; it’s also about feeling a deep connection with the unborn child. Many mothers read parts of the Quran or recite heartfelt prayers while placing their hands on their belly, fostering a strong bond between them, their baby, and Allah.
Gratitude and Patience
Express gratitude to Allah for the miraculous gift of childbirth and the strength granted during labor and delivery. Cultivating an attitude of gratitude invites blessings and abundance into the birthing experience. Recognize each contraction as a sign of Allah’s mercy and grace.
Childbirth requires immense patience and perseverance. Trust in Allah’s timing and wisdom, embracing each moment of difficulty as an opportunity for spiritual growth and endurance.
Recommended Duas for Pregnancy and Delivery
Below are some commonly cited supplications. These are not strictly from hadith in the context of childbirth but are general duas and words of dhikr known to ease hardship:
- Dua for Ease“Allahumma la sahla illa ma ja’altahu sahla, wa anta taj’alul-hazna idha shi’ta sahla.”
Translation: “O Allah, there is no ease except what You make easy. And if You will, You make the difficult easy.” - Short Dhikr: “Ya Latif” (يَا لَطِيفُ)
- “Al-Latif” is one of Allah’s Beautiful Names, meaning “The Subtle, The Gracious.” Repeating “Ya Latif” can help a mother feel the gentle mercy of Allah in her most trying moments.
- Istighfar (Seeking Forgiveness)
- Repeating “Astaghfirullah” (“I seek forgiveness from Allah”) is a powerful way to draw closer to Him and invoke His mercy. Some scholars mention that istighfar can help remove spiritual barriers and bring about ease in various difficulties.
Tip: These duas can be recited anytime during the pregnancy, during labor, or even postpartum for continued emotional and spiritual support.
Additionally, you can read the following Quranic dua throughout your pregnancy:
رَبِّ لَا تَذَرْنِي فَرْدًا وَأَنتَ خَيْرُ الْوَارِثِينَ
“My Lord, do not leave me alone [with no heir], while you are the best of inheritors.”(Surah 21:89)

“O Lord, bestow on me a goodly offspring from You; verily, You are the hearer of prayer.(Al Imran:38)
Dua for Delivery and Conceiving
If you have crossed your expected due date or are trying to get pregnant, recite the following duas:
- “My Lord, grant me [a child] from among the righteous.” (Surah As-Saffat 37:100)
- “O Lord, bestow on me a goodly offspring from You; verily, You are the hearer of prayer.” (Surah Al Imran 3:38)
- This dua of Prophet Zakaria (A.S) is also recommended:
“Rabbi habli min ladunka thurriyyatan tayyibah. Innaka samiu addua.” (Surah Al Imran 3:38)
“Oh my Lord! Grant me a righteous child as Your special favor; surely You hear all prayers.”

My Lord, grant me [a child] from among the righteous.”(37:100)

I seek refuge for her in You and her offspring from the Shaitaan the rejected. My Lord grants [for] me from Yourself offspring pure. Indeed, You are All-Hearer of the prayer.” (Surah Al-Imran 3:35-38)

Advice from Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-‘Uthaymeen
Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-‘Uthaymeen (may Allah have mercy on him) was asked about verses to recite for easing childbirth. He recommended reciting verses that speak of ease and childbirth, such as:
- “Allah intends for you ease, and He does not want to make things difficult for you.” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:185)
- “And no female conceives or gives birth, but with His Knowledge.” (Surah Fatir 35:11)
These verses, recited with belief in their impact, can be beneficial as the entire Quran is a healing and mercy. Shaykh al-‘Uthaymeen emphasized the power of the Quran in healing, citing the verse:
- “And We send down from the Qur’an that which is a healing and a mercy to those who believe (in Islamic Monotheism and act on it), and it increases the Zalimoon (polytheists and wrong-doers) nothing but loss.” (Surah Al-Isra 17:82)
This highlights the Quran’s role in healing both spiritual and physical ailments when recited with sincere faith.
Dua for Delivery if You have crossed your expected due date or you are trying to get pregnant-

“My Lord, do not leave me alone [with no heir], while you are the best of inheritors.”(Surah 21:89)

“O Lord, bestow on me a goodly offspring from You; verily, You are the hearer of prayer.(Al Imran:38)
It is the Dua of Zakaria (A.S): Rabbi habli min ladunka thurriyyatan tayyibah. Innaka samiu addua. (” Oh my Rab! Grant me a righteous child as Your special favor ; surely you hear all prayers.” Surah Ale Imraan, verse 38)

Dua For Delivery
Dua for Delivery 01
First five Verses from Surah Al Inshiqaq chapter 84 (1-5) is recommended to be read during the time of delivery.

It is also recommended to Read Surah Maryam and Surah Yaseenand Ayatul Kursi. The Islamic education of the child starts when the child is still in the womb of the mother. This is through the thoughts that she carries in those days, by the feelings that she has, by the kind of books that she reads, by the kind of company that she keeps and by the kind of things that she hears. So , We should read to our unborn child .

Other Short Supplications We can Read for easy delivery are-
Dua for Delivery 02
Hasbunallaahu wa ni’imal wakeel
Allah suffices us and He is the best guardian
Dua for Delivery 03
Inniy u’eedhuhaa bika wa dhurriyyatahaa minas shaytaanir rajeem
And I command her and her offspring to Thy protection, from the evil one, the rejected.
NB: Please Note that these are only the Recommended “Dua for delivery ” suggested by the Scholars and there are no dua for delivery recorded in Saheeh Hadith
It must be noted that there are NO Duas in the saheeh Sunnah that are specifically for the pregnant woman or the baby.Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-‘Uthaymeen (may Allah have mercy on him) was asked: Are there any verses that may be recited for the purpose of making childbirth easier for the woman?
He replied:
I do not know of anything of that nature in the Sunnah, but if you recite over the pregnant woman who is in labour that which speaks of things being made easier, such as the verse (interpretation of the meaning):
“Allah intends for you ease, and He does not want to make things difficult for you”[al-Baqarah 2:185]; and that which speaks of childbirth and delivery, such as the verse (interpretation of the meaning): “And no female conceives or gives birth, but with His Knowledge” [Faatir 35:11] – this will be beneficial; it has been tried and tested, by Allah’s leave.
The entire Qur’an is healing; if the reciter and the one to whom it is recited believe in its impact then it must inevitably have an effect, because Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning):
“And We send down from the Qur’an that which is a healing and a mercy to those who believe (in Islamic Monotheism and act on it), and it increases the Zalimoon (polytheists and wrong-doers) nothing but loss” [al-Isra’ 17:82]. This verse is general in meaning; healing and mercy includes healing of hearts from the diseases of doubt and desire, as well as the healing of bodies from physical disease. End quote.
Ref-“Fataawa Noor ‘ala ad-Darb, tape no. 257, side A.”

Translation: And Allah created you from dust, then from a sperm-drop; then He made you mates. And no female conceives nor does she give birth except with His knowledge. And no aged person is granted [additional] life nor is his lifespan lessened but that it is in a register. Indeed, that for Allah is easy.(35:11)
Practical Tips for Expectant Mothers
Tips for Practicing Duas During Pregnancy and Labor
Tips & Reflections
- Mental Preparedness:
- Pair your duas with affirmations: “Allah is with me. I am strong. This pain leads to a beautiful blessing.”
- Prior to going into labor, spend a few moments each day with these duas so that they come to your tongue naturally.
- Support System:
- If possible, have a spouse, family member, or friend remind you of the duas or recite alongside you. Hearing them from someone else can help when your own concentration wavers.
- Combine Spiritual & Practical Measures:
- Remember that trusting Allah goes hand-in-hand with seeking professional medical care. Follow your doctors’ advice, practice breathing techniques, and maintain a positive mindset.
- Stay Hydrated and Calm:
- Although labor is physically demanding, try to remain as calm as possible. Slow, deep breaths and continuous dhikr can keep adrenaline levels lower and your heart more at ease.
Common Misconceptions
- “Dua Alone Is Enough; I Don’t Need Medical Help.”
- Islam teaches us to tie our camel (take the necessary means) and then place our trust in Allah. Utilize medical expertise and your birth plan alongside spiritual practices.
- “I Must Recite a Special ‘Childbirth Dua’ Found in Hadith.”
- While there isn’t a specific hadith referencing a “labor-only” dua, the general duas for ease, healing, and Allah’s help are absolutely applicable. The Prophet (ﷺ) taught us general supplications to use in times of hardship, and childbirth is indeed a major hardship with immense blessings.
- “If I Don’t Recite These, I’ll Have a Difficult Delivery.”
- Duas are tools for spiritual peace and seeking Allah’s mercy; they’re not magic formulas guaranteeing results. One’s sincere trust and effort, coupled with Allah’s decree, determines outcomes.

Conclusion
Welcoming a child into this world is a deeply emotional and spiritually significant moment. By turning to Allah through dua, reading Quranic verses, and keeping your heart engaged in dhikr, you invite barakah (blessings) into your childbirth experience. Remember, no matter how challenging labor feels, you are never alone—Allah is with you, supporting you in ways seen and unseen.
Final Thought:
May Allah grant every expectant mother an easy labor, a healthy baby, and abundant blessings throughout this remarkable journey. Whether you’re reciting these duas for yourself or for a loved one, approach each contraction and each moment of anticipation as an opportunity to forge a stronger connection with your Creator.
